It took fewer than three hours (including lunch), the jury found punitive damages as well as compensatory. Trump walking out in the middle of the closing arguments may have pissed some of them off.

After Trump stormed out, Roberta Kaplan told the jury, “he thinks with his wealth and power he can treat Ms. Carroll how he wants and will suffer no consequences.”

To explain what happened here, this was the second phase of her lawsuit. That he had defamed her was decided in the previous trial, which he didn’t even bother to attend. Now he’s complaining about not being able to raise the defenses he raised in the first trial (but didn’t testify), but the question for this phase was narrow. The jury had to answer two questions: 1. Is she entitled to more than nominal damages? 2. If so how much (for repair of reputation)? Then they had to decide whether he acted maliciously, and determine the amount of punitive damages.

She had been awarded 5 million in the first trial, but then he kept on defaming her and this verdict is intended to discourage him from future defamation. If he continues to defame her, he may end up with an even larger check to sign.
