I haven’t read the hard copy story in the North Coast Journal yet. I’ve only found the statement below posted on some Facebook accounts. But Los Bagels could only have been targeted simply because the owner, Dennis Rael, is Jewish. That is a hate crime.
Addendum: Apparently the NCJ only has the below statement – no story. I am informed that the Eureka outlet was defaced with stickers which have been removed.

But you know, “some” anti-Semitism is “justified,” according to Jon. So Mr. Rael should probably have consulted Jon, as the local self-appointed arbiter of “justified” anti-Semitism, before jumping to the conclusion that the perpetrators of this act were not “justified” in their anti-Semitic motivation.

Not the first incident of this kind, unfortunately:

When I saw that ad I was somewhat startled that I had not previously seen the story. Perhaps this was at the request of Mr. Rael; if not, it just represents a failure of our local media.
I think Mr. Rael’s letter in response to whatever happened is admirable, but his assertion that “this is not who we are as a community” is more about his hope and perhaps his rose-colored glasses than an accurate recitation of the facts on the ground.
We are precisely what we demonstrate we are.

Decades ago I was a voice student at Hartt College of Music at the University of Hartford. My voice teacher was Cantor Arthur Koret. Mr and Mrs Koret invited me to their home for Passover Seder and to help with their grandchildren. Mrs. Koret prepared the meal and we learned what each offering meant symbolically. Sometimes during my lessons, Cantor would tell me about his family – most were killed during the holocaust. I
I sang in the choir with the Hartford Symphony. We performed Ernest Bloch’s Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service) in Hebrew. It was a memorable experience.
It saddens me that one of my favorite places in Humboldt – Los Bagels has been targeted. It makes me wonder what our young people are being taught in school.

…betting odds: any actual Palestinians involved, or just a bunch of Karens, Rufus’s and hooligans stirring up a false op local freak out at the expense of Los Bagles, since being the #1 social gathering breakfast/brunch fast food spot is a vulnerability...
… tolerance by forcefully hiding away hate versus tolerance until forcing conversion away from hate… this is how liberals like Dennis think… and it does not work... because hate is a human right… because identifying those who hide away from reality (rather than admit reality)…are doing no favors to mankind or Arcata…
…regardless of it all, sticks and stones in a civil society SHALL BE PROSECUTED…
Personally, Dennis is not the problem nor the cure, just another participant direct or indirect based upon his prophile history and the idiots who mistake Dennis for Nazi Netanyahu…
… but I do humanly wonder what stance Dennis takes with regard to the genocide in Gaza predicated upon a Hamas attack for which the IDF already knew exact details about weeks prior and did nothing to prevent 10/7 after IDF reconnaissance uncovered the plans …🤷♂️ … as if to allow rape and murder to declare war…🤷♂️

In Alex Edelman’s show “Just for Us,” he makes the point that having grown up in a religious Jewish household, he finds empathy to be the ultimate Jewish value. I think that’s a fair statement, and explains why Jews have always been in the forefront of social justice movements, including the now-dead Israeli movement for peace with its neighbors.
It’s very rare that I feel “represented.” I highly recommend Edelman’s show to those who have access to “Max,” though I don’t know how much of the humor will translate. To give you some idea, the connective theme is his going to a white nationalist living room gathering in Queens, NYC. He finds himself, to his amused introspective astonishment, thinking to himself what a good boy he is for “getting along” with the white nationalists.
That, in a nutshell, explains the youthful Jewish presence at these anti-semitic rallies. It’s only after a bit more life experience that some of us figure out that we need empathy for ourselves as well.

There are 100% white supremacist nazis in Humboldt. They are not part of the broader community, but they do show up from time to time, like say at the redwood run. I have seen swastika and SS tattoos on dudes at the ferndale fair, and way to often in Fortuna. Nazi skins would occasionally show up at punk shows in the 90s and 00s, but fortunately that community had zero tolerance for those dudes. Those guys love to start shit and fortunately we had the numbers and it didn’t end up well for them.

Off topic, but worth noting:
Today Trump’s lawyer argued before the Supreme Court for “absolute immunity” for his client (and any president).
Justices asked about various scenarios, including:
Whether a president could order the assassination of a political rival and then be protected from prosecution by this “absolute immunity.”
and
Whether a president could order a military coup and then be protected from prosecution by this “absolute immunity.”
In both cases Trump’s lawyer answered in the affirmative.
Based on the reporting of the oral arguments, the court appears, incredibly, to be closely divided on whether to give presidents complete and total impunity to break the law — including the most serious crimes possible, like murder and treason — with the outcome likely to be decided by a single vote.

Humboldt has plenty of left wing kooks and plenty of right nuts, without more info no way to know which type was responsible for this. (And in theory maybe neither…but most likely was one or the other.)

“Minitel also showed the power of technology to help organize mass movements and bring about political change. In striking anticipation of movements like the Arab Spring, French university students in 1986 used the Minitel system to coordinate large-scale protests and evade the police.“
The more things change . . .

Los Bagels is full of shit, just like their products taste. If this was supposedly an anti-Semitic incident, where’s the beef? What did these stickers say that was so fucking anti-Semitic that the asshole owner had to grab every last bit of free publicity out of it that he could? Pathetic. Why would anyone believe Los Bagels anyway? Let’s see the photos. How many stickers are we talking about? Local fast food restaurants (which is the low-level, indigestible kind of outfit Los Bagels is) get hit with stickers of all sorts all the time. People are bored waiting for their food apparently and start putting stickers up in the drive thru, etc. on a regular basis around here. Let’s see these “anti-Semitic” stickers first before making a big deal out of what is probably an overreaction to some teenager’s random act of vandalism.
