Extremely disappointing. I would support a progressive primary run against Biden. I’ll vote for him in the general if the Republicans nominate a proto-fascist again, but it’s like supporting a Weimar candidate against Hitler – nothing to write home about.

Biden is the proto-fascist that EK (“The Proletariat”) votes for when Marxist Bernie is toasted cheese on a Texas outback bbq grill…

Fascism : a way of organizing a society in which a government ruled by a dictator controls the lives of the people and in which people are not allowed to disagree with the government.
So basically, in the most reasonable and simplest explanation, the USA operates like this…
President = The Dictator (Executive)
Congress = The Oligarchs (Legislative)
Law & Order = Police State (Judicial)
Examples:
Public Education
Covid Rape Shot
etc… etc… etc…
Let it all sink in…
Fascism (Oligarchy) : a way of organizing a society in which a dictator (Grouper government ruled by a Group) controls the lives of the people and in which people are not allowed to disagree with the dictator (Grouper) government.

Interesting that it’s this decision that makes you support a primary. Here is why a primary is the wrong idea, unless or until Biden says he won’t run: 1980.

Caved?
You can’t cave when he’s been issuing leases his whole time in office.
More than trump in fact.
https://biologicaldiversity.org/w/news/press-releases/biden-administration-oil-gas-drilling-approvals-outpace-trumps-2023-01-24/
Unfortunately there is no one in either party who’s a potential presidential front runner who has a position different than Biden/trump on oil and gas.
March 19, 2023 at 5:00 am
Jon Yalcinkaya
What would the end-goal be? To win? No that isn’t happening, not for climate change. If you want to win a primary you have to do better with African Americans who are the base of our party (based on the percentages with which the vote for Democrats and there relatively large % of our party).
Surely you’ve noticed that Biden and centrists doubled down on the influence of states with high percentages of African Americans, never mind that South Carolina is a Republican state. Honestly, this isn’t a bad thing, it’s the right thing to do to increase the importance of African American votes in our party and return Iowa to the pack.
Progressives have to be smart and strategic (and, well, good) even in the face of a centrist faction that doesn’t or wouldn’t play by the same rules (think Jealous in MD in 2018, Walton in 2021 and I’d argue Barnes in WI in 2022 but could never prove it). One important rule is not to primary an incumbent president and we learned what comes of that in 1980. The chances of beating an incumbent are slim to none to begin with and the damage of that run to progressives within the party will last for decades as evidence that really progressives don’t care about winning, only about shouting. You might have heard that argument in the comments of this blog.
What we should be doing is acknowledge the schism, don’t pretend that a centrist is FDR and continue to fight for control of the party. We are not enemies, even if we dare to say “defund the police” we need one another, at least those that are not independently wealthy and at some point the Barbara Lee’s (both as a CA Senator or as Democratic Chair after the 2018 election which was given to Jeffries), India Waltons or Bernie Sanders of our party need to be allowed a seat at the head of the table.
And “allowed” is the term because right now the center of our party has established and maintained barriers to challenges from the left up and down the ballot. This is what we have to work on to get Democratic Presidents that do the right thing, not a myopic run for President.

And to World Guy’s point, who would run? If Bernie ran, he’d destroy his legacy along with the reputations of all those that supported him or would support him including @AOC. The one option I heard on 538’s podcast that I think would have a legitimate chance is Raphael Warnock, but I don’t see any reason he’d challenge Biden now rather than wait for 2028, he’s young.

So, down from five to three drilling pads and 2.8 million acres in the Arctic Sea declared off limits means trump and Biden are just the same.
Of those who are criticizing the Biden administration decision, which of you spoke out for the local wind project that turned out to be (surprise!) on sacred land?
See the difference? One is near, one is far. Both create a conflict between purity and compromise which must be resolved.
March 19, 2023 at 7:47 am
Mitch
I’ll be as clear as I’m capable of: I fully oppose oil leases and/or oil drilling in the Arctic. Period. I also recognize that any administration in power faces the need to balance the various constraints that reality imposes.
I further believe that different administrations will seek out different balances, and that it is incredibly destructive to go to “they’re all the same” when the administration which is closer to your own point of view does not do what you’d like it to do. Create pressure, sure: that is what could conceivably change the balancing point. Say “they’re all the same?” Not only is it not true, it’s self-destructive.

The holy Obama bragged about drilling more oil and gas than anyone, and he was correct he did. Fracking came to maturity during his terms in office. He could have put into place greater testing and penalties but he didn’t.
Trump and Biden are about neck and neck in their oil and gas production with Biden probably under due to the slower usage under Covid.
Biden put in a very solid person as interior secretary and she’s been basically worthless, I think point out how little the position can do if the higher ups want something.
Right now the US is selling LNG as fast as it can. Let’s remember that it was Obama that reversed the US policy that prevented the export of domestic fossil fuels. ( coal had always been ok to export). That opened the primary export of LNG. The wests embargo of Russian gas created a huge demand for LNG, and that’s not going away probably any time soon and it will push more and more gas fracking.
Do you actually see any one or party to push back against this? I sure don’t.
Last year was the highest world wide fossil fuel year ever and this year looks to beat that one. So we are going backwards not forwards, if the issue is CO2 reduction. And no end it sight.
So Mitch, I’m curious which front runner or party do you think is actively looking to reduce fossil fuel production?
March 19, 2023 at 9:01 am
Jon Yalcinkaya
limits means trump and Biden are just the same
Who said this or anything remotely like this?
March 19, 2023 at 9:03 am
Mitch
Worldguy,
No frontrunner that I’m aware of. That does not mean that there is no difference between the parties or their representatives. It means that no figure has emerged who is able to cause enough Americans to vote for the right thing.
President Carter tried to move the country away from fossil fuels back when it might have saved the planet, and the country informed him in no uncertain terms that it preferred a right-wing actor who went on to remove solar panels from the white house. The Democrats ran a war hero and environmentalist: first he was Swift Boated and then, after winning election, he allowed it to be stolen from him by the Brooks Brothers mobsters.
That is my only point: that we continually offer up sacrificial lambs to take our own blame away. The problem is us.
March 19, 2023 at 9:03 am
Jon Yalcinkaya
Crap, in my defense I don’t read World Guy in full as I haven’t found him credible or having a coherent politics.
March 19, 2023 at 9:07 am
Mitch
Jon,
You are correct. No one said the parties are the same in this round. But there is still a huge purity group which actively insists that the problem is the Democrats and not the country. The problem is the country, and until that is understood, nothing is going to change. Environmental activist Humboldt couldn’t even install a wind turbine, and that says it all. We are selfish beyond what is survivable.
March 19, 2023 at 9:09 am
Mitch
What needs changing is at the level of Western culture. Politics, were culture to change, would follow. But at this point it’s mainly a question of how many poor people will die as a result of our cruel self-centeredness, not whether they will.
March 19, 2023 at 9:19 am

Imagine if every superyacht on the planet was egged whenever it arrived at a port. Imagine if it was universally considered distasteful for an “artist” to perform for the wealthy or powerful. Imagine if big pickups that were never used for hauling were painted pink overnight. Imagine if every prosperity theology preacher were endlessly investigated for their financial fraud — not by government but by volunteers. Imagine if every bank in the country were drained of its deposits, along with every credit union in the country that exists primarily to enrich its CEO. Imagine if, on a daily basis, anyone trying to get into an ExxonMobil headquarters had to walk through a sea of people shouting at them, and if the executives were shunned at charity and university dinners, instead of honored for donating a building.
There’s a ton of hard work that needs doing. It would help if those who were inclined to do it, and got themselves into office, were not turned on immediately. It would help if Obama hadn’t had to knuckle-under to the banks immediately, having enough intelligence to know what would have been done to him if he hadn’t.

There is one woman from Trinidad who stands as a woman in black at the Trinidad exit from 101 every Friday afternoon. I don’t know who she is, but I am in awe of her tenaciousness and her ability to stand alone, abilities I demonstrably lack. She isn’t an executive director of anything and as far as I know she doesn’t lead any parades or offer any speeches, she just makes herself a reminder to others of what we are. In a just world, she’d be running things.

Some entertaining comments (humorous) from a few self appointed experts on all things, masters of the universe?
I cannot understand why any somewhat rational person would even consider voting for Biden. Biden is controlled by others, my opinion. Others than are interested in their power and wealth, not the U.S. Others being radical lefties and the CCP, again my opinion. Besides Joe’s obvious cognitive issues there are serious issues about his credibility and he’s had issues his entire political career. There is the phrase “follow the money”. Try Peter SChweizer’s book, “Secret Empires”, about corruption with American politicians. Book has to do with both parties. Very informative, Schweitzer uses open source information for his book, not from various anonymous sources and tweets. I could go on and on but one just needs to follow up on last weeks news on the Biden family corruption to have a clearer idea of the real lunchbox Joe! And of course Cornpop was a bad dude and Hunter is the smartest guy Joe knows ???

So Bo, if you have a few extra minutes you might hit YouTube and query Biden gaffs, Biden lies, or maybe Biden word salad!? Then you can ponder your thoughts on this subject? You don’t like Peter Schweitzer? I guess books make your type uneasy?
So can you suggest any legitimate reason the Biden’s get so much money from China ? I already know the answer, the correct answer that is.

Biden has long been known for the occasional gaffe.
To my knowledge, though, he’s never pretended that he knows more medicine than his doctor, and has never subjected the country to a bull session on live TV where he pondered consuming disinfectant as a way to deal with a viral infection.
We’re not talking glass houses here. We’re talking about a total imbecile who, because he was gifted with shamelessness, was able to turn rich into richer, and then richer into fame, and then fame into power. His history is well-known, but people like FHCR are probably ignorant of it.
The book that increased his fame, and created the fantasy of his business wisdom, was ghost-written, and the ghost-writer had things to tell the world about trump. Among other things, he told us that trump had zero attention span and zero interest in anything that wasn’t for his own personal benefit.
You ought to read what the real author had to say about trump before complaining about the occasional Biden gaffe.

Yeh, professional liars make me uneasy.
Im not a fan of Biden. So your not gunna score any points with me by directing me to youtube. Your only fired up because your youtube algorithm was designed to promote views and likes through anger and conflict. You click it up, have no control and your opinions are created for you.
Have you seen Trump gaffs? They are in every way just as embarrassing as Biden. The Trump’s also get plenty of money from China. But either that fact either doesn’t bother you, or you can just deny its true. Just pretend the Waltons, Costco and other major US corporations who by and large are fully republican conservatives are not dealing with China big time. It only seems to matter when its the opposition.
So what is going on here? Why is dealing in china so bad when most major republican capitalists are doing it?

“Occasional gaff” ? Did you gag when you typed that Mitch?
Not going to score points with Bo? Oh no. Do you really think I’m trying to score points? You can’t be that thick. I suggested YouTube as it kind of seems like reading is not your strong point. No doubt there is a lot of trash on YouTube, but some really good stuff too – from home handyman DIY projects to historical documentaries and dog training videos …….. can you name those Republican capitalists that are dealing with China? Can you name 3 ?
I did read an exceptional article by Victor David Hansen this morning, on the American Greatness website. Mitch would get it, but never admit it.
March 20, 2023 at 3:23 pm

I repeat this a lot, but maybe it bears repeating. I do not have a problem with conservatives who I believe share my goals: equality of government treatment for all, compassion for those who might fall behind, restraint on the power available to the wealthiest and most powerful, a recognition that humans who happen to live in other countries are still endowed with human rights.
But I haven’t seen much of such folks lately. And the group I have seen don’t strike me as conservative any more than they strike me as liberal. trump was the victory of mammon in America.
I don’t think claiming a label makes one anything. And, perhaps as a result of my age, I don’t see myself as aligned with certain attitudes expressed by some in today’s “left.” But I also think that trumpers do an awful lot of parodying of the left and then, having engaged in parody, act as if their parody is an accurate representation. It’s not, though every part of the political spectrum has people who push the boundaries. Sometimes they are just ahead of their time, and sometimes they are just idiots. I wouldn’t judge the conservative movement by its most racist members, and I wouldn’t want the left to be judged by people trying to ban people from campuses.
March 20, 2023 at 3:27 pm
Mitch
And I already have to modify my statement for clarity.
See here for the difference between equality and equity: https://interactioninstitute.org/illustrating-equality-vs-equity/
When government behavior has hurt classes of people, I think it’s totally appropriate that those people be assisted in special ways. I understand that there is no perfect answer regarding that assistance. So when I say equality of government treatment for all, that does not mean that I think government should not make up for having kicked some people to the ground over and over.

Thanks, JW. Until trump, I’d thought those goals were pretty nearly universal among both conservatives and liberals. Then he turned over the rocks and out you popped, in support of greed, hatred, and herd-following.

Oh my Bo, international corporations doing regular/real business internationally!? You may have a point with Mitch McConnell but Ron Johnson?! How do you square that ? Can you?
Tomorrow’s the big day! Wonder what the effect of Cohen’s former attorney testifying before the Manhattan grand jury today will be ? Maybe I’ll get up early and make some popcorn?

Studies show that people who are waiting for Jeebus to come to earth and kill 90% of the population don’t give a flying f*ck about the environment, the community, ect.
You are arguing with psychopaths.
If any changes happen, the USA will be the LAST place to make them happen.
I recommend moving to a Buddhist country or an atheist country to save your sanity and increase the quality and quantity of your debates. It has improved my life immensely.

People who work in waste management aren’t “garbage men”.
You wouldn’t know this since you are a mooch who lives in your moms basement, but there are women in the industry. And managers too!
Only an elitist fool like you would put down blue collar workers.
Was your wimpy-ass father a banker?
I’ve dealt with wimps like you my whole life. My blue collar father would have kicked your dad’s ass and then f*cked your mother.

I can’t disagree with what Friedman says in that video clip. But what you may fail to notice is Friedman says nothing at all about the way in which a capitalist system allocates its wealth, or about how it deals with poverty, or about how it regulates its economy. Just that self-interest is an important motivator.
As an aside, everyone’s familiar with the idea of dangling a carrot on a stick in front of a donkey to get the donkey to move forward. Notice that if the donkey actually gets the carrot, the forward movement will stop. I think the idle rich are the laziest people on the planet, and the poor the hardest working. But the media is not owned by the poor.

So, Jon, is it that you *don’t* believe that self-interest is an important motivator, or do you know of examples that Friedman is ignoring?
March 21, 2023 at 1:56 pm
Mitch
Once again, free enterprise based on individual self interest is what motivates (most) people to create wealth. But free enterprise capitalism can be regulated in the public interest (or not), safety nets can be established (or not), and caps on wealth can be emplaced (or not). I believe that societies that regulate capitalism are much happier places than societies that let the wealthiest walk all over everyone else. But I’m with Friedman in never having found many angels that Donahue imagines exists.
Jonas Salk is one angel. But there aren’t many. And nothing about capitalism prevents the angels from doing things for free.
I’m well aware that in the computer industry, for example, most of the financial rewards haven’t gone to the technologists who have created the standards and systems that everything today runs on — they’ve gone to a few people who were able to add some paint or sell to corporate America. But that, as far as I can tell, is how things work. Look at MS Word and look at an editor called Emacs. I use Emacs, but the world wants MS Word, and I don’t think a commisar like myself has any business insisting that the world learn Emacs just because it is a zillion times better, which it is.

Mitch does not understand “over-reach from within the rules”…most victims of government over-reaching have already been playing by the rules, but government can’t stop, wants more and more, which is why USA is likely already in a pre-phase for another Civil War based upon the cultural, socioeconomic, financial, religious, personal freedoms, etc… problems…rather mistreatment and gross abuse, acute or obtuse, that is elevating the hatred…
…probably in this lifetime by say 2040-2050, USA likely at war with itself…

Any history buffs here?
The USA imposed a 45% tax rate on Japan in 1945 after dropping 2 nukes on them.
The reasoning was that we didn’t want Japan to have all of their wealth in the hands of a small number of people.
Today, Japan is a PARADISE compared to the US. I have spent months in Japan. I have never seen a homeless person. They have trains that can take you anywhere in the country. Everyone dresses nicely. Everyone eats good, fresh food.
Why can’t the USA look at its dysfunctional system and return to the tax scheme of the 1940-1980 that turned it into the largest industrial power the world had ever seen?
45 years of decline in the USA has been devastating. Homelessness, despair, and hatred now rule the day.
The USA needs to raise taxes, preach community, and restore sanity before I would even consider living there again.

Henchman, you aren’t a person to talk about rules. Methheads don’t like rules. Duh.
I worked for a utility company when I lived in Humboldt. We had a list of “problem customers”. Guess who the number one problem customer was? Ill give you one guess.
I was a manager and was forced to send a police escort with my employees to do maintainence near his home.
He is a crazy methhead. All of his neighbors hate him. His house is an ugly, unfinished eyesore.
Just giving some history here. Henchmen is a person who we should feel sorry for, not listen to political advice.
He was raised with a ton of money and squandered it all.

Do you know of examples that Friedman is ignoring?
How about the US with a 90% top marginal tax rate for starters? Seemed to work fine. Jim Crow was extant with this so I don’t want to go back to the 50’s but the two were not linked in any way by policy.
Keynesian economics gets us there Friedman’s gets us the US as envisioned by Regan and Chile under Pinochet instead of Allende.

The US with a 90% tax rate? That was a capitalist country. You could listen to Friedman again, and read what I had to say.

The US economy was never stronger than when the tax rate was 90%.
No other country has ever had such industrial dominance relative to the rest of the world. Well…maybe ancient China.
As soon as Reagan lowered the rate and sent all of the manufacturing to China, the US went to sh*t.

On the subject of “garbage men,” my father used to tell a story. I hated his stories when I was young, and, isn’t life funny, now I repeat them.
The organs of the body were having an argument over which was most important. The brain chimed in of course, and the stomach, and the lungs. The asshole didn’t say much, but just closed things up tight, and within a few days, had won the argument.
Try to live in a city where the sanitation workers have gone on strike, if you think they aren’t important.
You’ll have no trouble living in a city where the top 0.01% have stopped working. You won’t notice any difference for a few months, but then you’ll notice there’s less poverty.

Travel to anywhere in the world and you will find what people think of “America” is from the time when the tax rates were at their highest.
The 57 Chevy.
Elvis.
Rock and Roll.
Rolling Stone Magazine.
Gibson.
Fender.
Playboy Magazine.
McDonald’s.
Dennys.
Disneyland.
Mickey Mouse.
Nowadays, nobody abroad is influenced by American culture, except the brands Apple and Tesla.
I have never seen a Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, or Kanye West t-shirt abroad.
American cars (other than Tesla) are viewed as oversized, gas guzzling piles of junk.
“Chilis” or “Applebees”, or the dozen other junk chain restaurants have never caught on abroad.
Once in a while I see a “Marvel” shirt on a teenager, but it is very uncommon. The world views those modern American superhero movies as junk.

Mitch,
I will have to remember that story!
I have a feeling that people who hate on the garbage collectors also hate on the janitors. Or the cooks. Or the waiters. Or the factory workers. Or the bus drivers. Or the farmers. Or the construction workers.
So I don’t take offense when people put down sanitary workers. I know that they hate ALL hard workers.
Maybe deep down inside it is jealousy? Working with your hands is very human, and some people are disconnected from that.
Maybe it is elitism? Ignorance? I don’t know.

My guess is fear. Deep down they understand that they are benefiting from the violence on which the system runs.
