Debt ceiling politics, Biden’s sloppy handling of the documents and the controversy, and gas stoves become the latest topic of culture wars. Also I make a new House majority impeachment prediction.
And Matt has told me I need to stop saying “anyway” at the end of segments.

“ sloppy handling of the documents “ ??! You think ?

That’s really what it was. His people packed up crap without looking at what they were packing and so it’s been sitting in his storage. There probably need to be formal protocols where someone with security clearance check all of the documents when anybody closes out a federal government office – before the staff starts packing. Maybe that even happened and the security cleared person just didn’t do their job.
As I said in the show, I think Merrick Garland’s move was a stroke of genius. It drew anger from Democrats. He looks like he’s being impartial. The Trumper comes in, but he discovers that some staffer was sloppy. He wags his finger at Biden for letting it happen, even though everybody knows it’s unreasonable for the VP to micromanage all of that. Calls for new protocols. End of story.
That’s not going to be possible for Trump.

“end of story”. Now that’s some funny shit ! Are you saying that the staff packing up for trump were competent and meticulous?

Republicans have to be careful on this. The harder they hit Biden on this the harder the impact will be on Trump because his transgressions are a hundred times worse. And yet Trump is still kicking Desantis ass in the polls.

Trumps “transgressions” are indeed a hundred times worse but that doesn’t excuse Biden’s six year lapse or returning top secret documents he had no business taking in the first place.

Cultures of impunity lead to lax and corrupt behavior. The comments on the shoplifting brouhaha online elsewhere make it clear that people understand that with respect to shoplifting by high school students. But we fail to understand its applicability to the wealthy and/or powerful.

As a true Democrat I’ve waited for the last minute to fill out my ADEMs ballot. Eric, you did not even file a statement? What the heck?
Here is someone whose statement I like. I’ll give you a chance to make your case Eric…I could have sworn I saw a statement by you somewhere but it wasn’t on the CADems site.
I am a New Deal Democrat and I cut my political teeth as the Chair of SEIU Local 1021’s Sonoma County Political Committee (COPE). I served in this position from 2017-2022 having left this last summer for a career at another employer. During that time, I helped to get many Pro-Worker Democratic candidates elected to public office to ensure that our tax dollars are being reinvested into our communities and not into corporate coffers.
Not only have I been a Union Member for 10 years, I am also a co-founder of the Sonoma County Tenants Union, dues paying member of Democratic Socialists of America, and The Sierra Club. I get my political views from being a devout Methodist Christian.
I will work with other real Democrats to ensure that our party represents those who work for a living and care about their community and families. Our party’s platform should focus on these things. Ensuring that we return to New Deal principles of ending poverty, expanding childcare access, expanding worker’s rights and compensation, protecting women and LGBTQ rights, and sending our budget surpluses to local governments to help achieve their goals.
If you feel that our Democratic party is getting out of touch with working-class Californian’s, then vote for me and the other working-class Democrats running to be delegates. Thank you.

Mitch
As a mere fake Democrat, I confess I’m surprised that LGBTQ rights were on the New Deal platform back in FDR’s time. Thank goodness I no longer have to worry about statues of FDR.
January 22, 2023 at 10:30 am
Jon Yalcinkaya
Candidate 23- Michael Stanford. One of two only non-Humboldt Progressives-endorsed candidates to have a statement.
He even LGBTQ rights Mitch. So, do you see a FDR Democrat as someone who is explicitly racist (a-la Southern Democrats at the time), misogynist or anti-LGBTQ? FDR is *the* example of what a modern populist Democrat could look like along with the ever-lasting majorities in the House and possibly Senate. Of course, as I learned quickly from the Democratic Twitter Debates post 2016 you must include *woke* FDR. (And I don’t use woke dismissively, woke is good afaic)
https://www.adem.cadem.org/candidates-results/ad-02
Did you vote? Nothing fake about you Mitch as a Democrat as long as you are registered as one (or run as one 😅 – a Sanders reference). BTW, the in-person voting for the ADEMs is *today* in Eureka at Democratic HQ from 12-4. I think you can register today and vote against Michael for having invoked FDR’s initials.
January 22, 2023 at 10:36 am
Jon Yalcinkaya
I disagree with Michael’s use of the term “real” Democrat to Mitch but I do believe, as you know there is a real ideological struggle going on within our party between both factions of real Democrats and if you are registered as a Democrat, it seems we are on opposing sides of that divide.
Btw HCDCC HQ where you can vote for CADems (I believe it’s not to late) is 527 4th St, Eureka.

Jon,
True Democrat is a synonym for real Democrat, so I’m confused that you are bothered by “real Democrat.”
My comment was a joke. FDR’s programs were wonderful, as was he. But to claim LGBTQ rights as a New Deal principle is not even wrong, it’s just silly. To notice that is not to oppose FDR or LGBTQ rights or anything else beyond the expectation among some that silliness be taken seriously.

It seems to me Mitch you are seeking something to criticize. Michael did not link FDR to LGTBQ, you did, and you are right, it’s silly. FDR is shorthand for woke or intersectional FDR b/c the country, well more to the point, Democrats, have moved on since 1945. FDR represents big, Keynesian, government, a government with the interests of the people, not the economic royalists in both parties, in mind.
But this might be about statues, not today’s election, and if so, more power to you. You’ve got your person who works priorities.

mitch looking for something to criticize ? It’s what he lives for. You know that jon….
January 22, 2023 at 1:44 pm
Eric Kirk
To say that LGTBQ rights were not a part of the New Deal isn’t to criticize FDR, although it may be legitimate to criticize him on such policy. Environmentalist policies also were not party of the New Deal. Nor an anti-war platform. Nor universal healthcare. Obama and Clinton were opposed to marriage equality until it became politically feasible (though not Bernie Sanders – just saying – he helped make it become politically feasible by taking the right position before it was safe).
As for the documents scandal, and I do think it’s, well “scandal” may be too strong. But it’s not good and it doesn’t really matter that Trump’s deal is a hundred times worse (it is) – at best it was sloppy, but also it’s an indication of the sense of entitlement that comes with power.
Honestly though, the fact that he didn’t even know he had the documents makes me wonder if there aren’t thousands of documents in the homes of present and past presidents, vice-presidents, senators, and house members – not to mention appointed officials. The report that a portion of the documents date back to his Senate days raises two questions for me.
1. If these documents are so important why is ANYONE allowed to take them out of secured government buildings?
2. Has the government gone overboard as to declaring documents classified? Maybe we need strict classification for such designation, and a process by which the designation is confirmed by an elected official. Because I’m wondering if some of the documents are classified because they are or were politically inconvenient to someone in power rather than national security or other government interest.
I mean seriously, how is it that these secret documents which are so important have been out of government possession for over 10 years and nobody ever knew about it?
Again, Biden isn’t fighting a subpoena and he has allowed for the searches to take place, and his gutless AG appointment sent it over to a Trumper independent counsel. I do think it’s a brilliant move on Garland’s part, but I also think it’s a bit gutless as his office really should be conducting both the Trump and Biden investigations.

….”Honestly though, the fact that he didn’t even know he had the documents”. So, you accept that as fact? You do recall that this was the guy who was forced out of a run for President because of lying, right?
January 22, 2023 at 4:14 pm

That was decades ago, and yeah, I accept as more-likely-than-not fact. If he had known about them and intended to keep his possession of them a secret – for whatever purposes – he wouldn’t have disclosed all this to begin with.

Exactly. This is what I have been saying. Ill wager big Joes documents are not tactical military data, CIA coup plots, or nuclear secrets. I believe this is likely true of the Trump files as well, and with the countless random files other past presidents and officials ended up with.

What is interesting listening to the Sunday shows on the debt ceiling (ignoring the worthless speculation and comparisons about confidential papers-gate) is that REPUBLICANS (not to mention Democrats) are saying Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are not on the table for cuts. And they are saying it with passion. Sounds to me like that is another winning platform for Democrats – to be the party of fully funding and expanding these programs. Once they are in they are popular across both parties. What is stopping us?
Republicans and not winning 51% of House elections and 60% of Senate elections, sure, but it’s also ourselves.
