In this episode of TV Nation from the mid-1990s, Michael Moore visited Cobb County and kind of ambushed then-Speaker Newt Gingrich who had just risen to power under the Republicans’ Contract on America when Clinton and the Democrats probably suffered the most horrific first midterm election in modern history. As of yesterday, Cobb County proved itself to be reliably deep blue!
Let’s move more of the techies out of the SF Bay Area and into Georgia where they can do some good!
This was a very telling piece about the hypocrisy of politics. Yes, Democrats can be hypocrites too, but New Gingrich was the Olympic champion!
……
Meanwhile, this is how Warnock won.

Zelensky has conducted prisoner swaps himself. He understands the game.

Prisoner swap of Griner for MOD… while Paul Whelan is left behind…
Not a pun, but figuratively and literally… left.
Domestically, more folks see Law and Order for what it truly is… A SHAM.
Meanwhile “La Barbie” all up and disappeared from the mainframe, MIA…

DeSantis said nothing when Trump called for a suspension of the constitution. He is a coward.

I really like Michael Moore, but we shouldn’t be triumphalist as if Michael somehow won in this battle of the left wing v right wing.
Newt Gingrich helped to change America, leading the charge to help Republicans take the House from the Democrats for the first time on 40 plus years. Michael Moore made great aspirational movies which helped leftists to cope with the Bush years and documented the banality and greed behind the deindustrialization of the Midwest.
Scoreboard goes to Gingrich who used populism to take over his party which became the governing force of his party to this day. The left wing of the Democratic Party still waits on the wings while the corporatists and the status-quo establishment do everything they can to stay in power while at the same time denying there is any rift, and if there is, arguing it’s really only about how to best win elections.
All the while states that used to be purple like OH & FL turn increasingly red using the exact type of right-wing populism Gingrich helped to create.
I’ve recommended the podcast below before. It’s a great, short history of the political significance of Gingrich and how he helped to change the Republican Party.
Gingrich should be an inspiration to leftists, not in his politics, but that it is possible for one faction of a party to unseat the other.
And for those who might be afraid of a change in Democratic leadership toward populism, the left wing version would not look like the right wing version, it’s not about barely concealed hatred, bigotry or “othering”; in a word populism is about authenticity. Authenticity is what distinguishes candidates like Sanders and Fetterman, Bush and Ocasio-Cortez, and Omar and Tlaib, at least imo.
If you have a way you view or judge the left wing of our party compared to the center, I’d like to hear it.

Biden is a coward because he doesn’t adopt right wing conspiracy theories?

I don’t know if Moore won the battle. What I do know is that Cobb County was once the largest Republican county stronghold in the country and now it’s solidly blue. That’s progress.

It’s nice to celebrate good news, I’ll allow it. Having said that it’s only progress if the net result across the nation is more formerly red counties are turning blue instead of the opposite. I was shocked by our double Senate victory in GA 2 years ago and admittedly I’m been considering GA reddish purple state.
Warnock had an important victory and imo is a great candidate and Senator yet he ran against a horrible candidate so I’m not sure this election yet means we can rely on GA to be at least competitive.
In other Senate news this tweet is all I had to see to understand the Senate news out of AZ. It’s not about narcissism, Sinema saw the writing on the Democratic wall and I’m sure it wasn’t from just one poll.
Should the Republicans field a candidate and hope for a split Democratic vote in 2024 or adopt Sinema as Democrats did in UT (Sen) and basically FL (Gov) this year? I don’t know how blue state-wide AZ votes have become, but I don’t think the clearly powerful Trumpist faction in AZ couldn’t help but run a candidate. If they did, I don’t know if a split Democratic vote saves them give the nearly universal Democratic disdain for Sinema give how much she has cost us and now as she has jumped ship.

I think Eric’s “Dobbs Effect” is even more pronounced in US Senate races given two factors a) the races are state-wide and not subject to gerrymandering and b) voters and the electorate are smart and they know that the Senate is the biggest hurdle right now to legislating Roe.
Yes we need the House and White House too, but the Senate has 6 year terms and we need a few more than we have and they must be “pure” to use a derogatory centrist term for a Democratic reality at least wrt legislating Roe and other “rights” or rights SCOTUS will be dismantling for the rest of our lifetimes including voting rights and the right to same-sex marriage.
Luckily for the latter it turns out Republicans are human too meaning some are LGBTQ allowing enough in the party of obstruction to help us pass federal legislation despite the filibuster.

This is an interesting tweet wrt the Dobbs effect, not because of the results of the election or even tactics imo, but because the quiet part is being said out loud, Roe and Dobbs are really about policy, not the Constitution and they, like the federal mandate to recognize same sex marriage which will Biden win sign soon, should be legislated, not decided by nine judges or a short document written 200 years ago.
The conservative here is, imo, wrong. It’s not going to be just one election, it’s going to be several until all states have a right to an abortion. Until then, elections will have a blue shift from their pre-Dobbs baseline.

Great thread…red calling out blue traitors, blue calling out red traitors…
…Henchy sits back in amusing laughter…
The word “traitor” is coming on strong… very much applicable to every blue/red supporter…
