Out of respect to the privacy of children, I can’t go into details, but my wife and I pulled our daughter out of the Eureka City Schools system because she was unsafe, as are all students. I am critical of charter schools, and some of the local CSs are less than impressive, but we had no options. When Van Vleck started talking about roping the charters back into district control it made me think of Gilead trying to reclaim its children lost to Canada. His leadership comes from another era. And the School Board is blind.
Lost Coast Outpost has some coverage of that last very disappointing meeting where they Board read a prepared “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” statement as the district continues to lose its best talent in teachers and staff.

Good move.
I pulled my daughter out of Eureka High over a decade ago.
1. Her car was damaged in the parking lot. I was told that there were 2 parking lots. One for redneck kids, one for hippie kids. The hippie parking was less safe and she should have expected it.
2. The teachers were unsupported of the hippie kids and overly supportive of the redneck kids.
3. My daughter was searched for weed a half dozen times. Never found a seed or a stem, but they harassed her until she cried. They were 100% sure that she had weed on her.
The staff at Eureka High are ignorant.

Incredible. Unsafechildren but we can’t talk about who, what, how or why? How do you think that makes other parents with children in the system feel?
Clearly not a subject for a public debate but I hope your child’s views guided your decision as parents and if it did, she should know that she has great parents to support her decision and her friends that remain in the school system will do well with the entire community, and apparently activist student body, devoted to doing what they can to make sure Eureka has a top flight education system.
I’m sad to see Lisa Olivier in the line of fire but perhaps when you are on the board you buy in more than you should.

It’s tough to lose good teachers and administrators and it’s tragic we are losing them. I hate to be the “opportunity” guy here, but this is a chance for overachieving students to step up and fill voids while the adults get their s%^t together and get top flight talent back. Parents also should play an active role in helping to keep their children on track because administrative controversies aside, the most important thing is each student’s ongoing education and preparation for college or whatever they choose as their next step.
Not every parent has the time, resources or perspective you and your wife do Eric; most probably don’t. I’m sad they’ll be losing you and your child in our public education system but I’m surely not going to fault you for it or make it political. It’s a personal decision and I’m disappointed you and yours came to this decision and I wish your child all the best in her new school.

Sounds like ECS needs an Admin change yesterday.

When has ECS ever not been mired in controversy…
…fool thy once, fool thy twice, fool thy 3 times a lady…
Personally, ECS is representative of the continuing fallout of Eureka as a city… could not pay many people money to live in or near Eureka city limits…

Eric, your family’s decision to pull your daughter out of ECS speaks volumes, especially in the middle of the school year.
