A century ago on this date Suffragettes were tortured in prison. We were several months into America’s involvement in a war the President had pledged to avoid. Dissent was slapped down hard, even if it wasn’t directly war-related. Though the brutality against the Suffragettes wasn’t quite on the scale of what was happening to their sisters in Britain, it was pretty bad. The 19th Amendment was a few years away. It was a pretty dark time for the progressives of the era. Take heart.

Night of Terror.
