Over the years (some) Northern Californian lib activists have toyed with the idea of a split, right about at San Luis Obisbo north.  Liberals were tired of Orange County  deciding elections, and up until Clinton took California in 1992, it was pretty much Republican candidates winning the Electoral College votes even when liberal Senators like Alan Cranston were somehow winning statewide.  1992 was a turnaround and Democrats have lost few statewide elections since.  Although we’ve passed some fairly conservative initiatives in that same time, and at one point conservatives managed to goad the majority into a recall which put a moderate Republican into office; it’s not looking real good for conservative prospects in the very near future even though the new redistricting should generate a little bit of affirmative action for them in the state and federal legislatures.

Well, now it’s the conservative’s turn to dream of secession.

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone announced Thursday that he will ask leaders in 13 counties to begin discussions about seceding from the state of California.

Under the proposal, Orange, Riverside, Imperial, San Diego, San Bernardino, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa and Mono counties would be asked to consider forming a 51st state, the State of South California.

Los Angeles was of course not invited.
