Last night was a tough one for progressives in California, though not as tough as it could have been.

Locally Measure L passed:

BONDS YES 64.12%

BONDS NO 35.88%

Imagine how frustrating those results would have been if it was another 2/3 vote?

…..

After a scary early evening, Proposition 16 went down solidly. It was one of the more cynical measures I’ve seen in years, and I’m glad voters saw through it.

…..

Proposition 17 also went down by almost the same margin, with a little last minute help from Los Angeles.

….

Okay, not a bright spot really.  Prop 14, affirmative action for wealthy moderates, went down in only two counties.  You’ll probably never see a results map like this again, but it went down in liberal San Francisco and conservative Orange County – two counties dominated by opposite ideologies, but with similar political savvy.

….

And Sen. Harry Reid caught an incredible break last night.  He’ll probably win handily in November.

….

Not bright spots necessarily, but TPM analyzes last night’s three biggest surprises on the national level.

….

Oh, and just to repeat a thread comment, progressives have to be very worried in the Fourth District supervisor race (though it really is far from over), but they have to be very happy with the Fifth District.  I think Sundberg’s in serious trouble.  I’ll analyze it more closely later.

….

Addendum: Truther queen Orly Taitz got 26 percent of the vote for the Republican Secretary of State race!  Have California Republicans lost their minds?!!

Only the Bay Area Republicans went for Campbell in the Republican US Senate primary, the moderate with the best chance of beating Boxer in November.

….

And maybe it’s just as well that Prop 15 failed.  Apparently, the conservative majority on the Supreme Court would have struck it down.
