That’s the title in this photo I grabbed from the HSU archives linked in the post below. The date is unknown and the only comments online are as follows:

R.J. Baker is in photograph. For more information about some of the people and their occupations see Humboldt Historian Jan-Feb 1980, p.7.

The Times Standard recently (within the past couple of years) posted some articles about socialists who had been elected to local offices in the early part of the 20th century.  It’s just a reminder that the concept was not always outside of the mainstream.  It took the Cold War a few years to take its toll.  I know nothing of these people, but it did take some character to embrace the S word, even in the olden days.

Baker, a friend of Jack London who was vehemently socialist, has a short biography online.

From the latest post on Humboldt Herald I learned that HSU has some old photos of Humboldt County online, images available as indicated on the database.  I found this one of Benbow.  Maybe Ernie or someone else can tell me what those buildings are down by the water where the park is now.

Sometimes the apology is as bad as the act.  Arkansas Republican Senate candidate Kim Hendren explains his reference to Senator Chuck Schumer as “that Jew.”

Hendren told me, “At the meeting I was attempting to explain that unlike Sen. Schumer, I believe in traditional values, like we used to see on ‘The Andy Griffith Show.’  I made the mistake of referring to Sen. Schumer as ‘that Jew’ and I should not have put it that way as this took away from what I was trying to say.”

As usual, the Republicans downplay it as a “plain talking” virtue rather than an underlying antisemitism.

Addendum: Senator Chuck “that Jew” Schumer has accepted the apology.

Look for those little robot helicopters.  I can see the grant applications now.

Actually more interesting to me is the revelation that the Dutch have a marijuana eradication policy.  I’ve known that marijuana isn’t actually “legal” in the Netherlands, due to international treaty.  According to the article, most marijuana there is illegal.

So great.  One more factor driving marijuana indoors.  More diesel.

Thanks to Hank’s own robot for the heads up.
