The Devil Makes 3, NPK & Bucky Walters At Mateel This Friday, March 6th This Friday, March 6th, the Mateel Community Center in Redway will present an evening of rocking acoustic music with The Devil Makes 3 and special guests The NPK and The Bucky Walters.
Hailing from Santa Cruz, CA, The Devil Makes 3 is at the forefront of today’s alternative acoustic movement with a slightly punky perspective on vintage American blues and bluegrass. Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk and rockabilly, the critically praised, drummer-less trio – consisting of guitarist/front man, Pete Bernhard; stand-up bassist, Lucia Turino; and guitarist/ banjoist, Cooper McBean – brings forth a genuine approach to acoustic music that is deeply steeped in rhythm. Their hip and danceable music has quickly made them into a national sensation and this will be their first performance at the Mateel Community Center.
Opening the show will be the original genre-bending bluegrass of Arcata’s own, The Bucky Walters, who will take the stage at 8pm, followed by a special acoustic performance by SoHum’s favorite alt rockers, The NPK.
Tickets are on sale now at the usual local outlets and online at http://www.inticketing.com for a price of only $15 MCC members, $17 general, or $20 at the door. Doors open at 7:30pm. This is an all ages show with snacks, desserts, beer, wine, and refreshments available for purchase. For more info visit http://www.mateel.org or call 923-3368 and don’t miss The Devil Makes 3 with special guests, The NPK and The Bucky Walters this Friday, March 6th at the Mateel Community Center.

The Hoedown is one of the reasons the Mateel is in trouble.

It is not. Would you get your facts straight please.
First considering what the Mateel has gone through it is doing quite well but it needs to get its feet under itself again and it needs some talent on the Board of Directors.
The Mateel is meeting its mission statement to the public and has throughout all the legal battering over Reggae on the River. It also stills owns Reggae on the River.
But it is not the economically affluent organization it once was and it now needs the communities help and support throughout the year. People have flooded back to participate with the Mateel now that the divorce is complete and it is clearly in the hands of the Board of Director’s once again rather than the production company.
A new event doesn’t happen overnight. It takes development over a number of years. It takes planning and foresight. The Hoedown fills a need in the community that has been tit fed on Reggae for years and has had other productions that are not Reggae cut off at the knees because the Reggae production company didn’t want competition from anyone or anything.
The Mateel mission is to deliver the arts and music to develop cultural diversity. It is meeting this mission goal under tremendous odds and guess what… you are not helping.
I say more power to them. I hope everyone continues to be involved and helps them through the rougher spots. Ah but that would be more like a modern community than the current Appalachian mindset too often applied.

So I guess when you make this kind of statement, it now makes it clear to me, as it should to all of you out their in SoHum Blog Land.
If the Mateel is still living up to its mission statement to the public as a 501c3, then what about the Community Parks mission statement.
For one, the mission statement for the Southern Humboldt Community Park is as follows: “The corporation is organized to own, administer, operate and maintain one or more parks for the benefit of the Southern Humboldt community, its visitors and guests, and to coordinate and work with the various communities, organizations and individuals who are
interested in the park”.
But I guess in doing so, this Park Board has closed both Parks. At first we heard it was those neighbors that shut our Parks down, then it was the County because of the neighbors, then it was just the County because of the zoning for events and gatherings, but the final and last reason was the truth, it was the Parks own Insurance carrier, but why now after all those years of un-permitted events on land use zoning for AG?
I know its Southern Humboldt County, but what the hell, the Park board has known since 2000 they needed to rezone the land before they could have large events, oh ya, they told everyone in the beginning they were not going to turn the Park into a concert venue, that’s right……….
So I guess the Park has not lived up to its nonprofit charity reasonability. Because they sure are not living up to their mission statement……
