Wish I had seen this thread before. Boy, if there is any validity to that ‘article’ then I would have been off the charts, literally. I smoked plenty in HS and college, while scoring in the top 5% in all my math & science classes. In fact I was high when I took the AP Calculus test. The scoring was 1 through 5 with 3 passing. I got a 5. While I don’t think it helped my math skills directly, it sure made me less nervous.

As far as the “IQ” test, that is a joke. I score way higher than I ‘should’, because the test itself was so easy to deconstruct. It’s a pathetically simplistic judge of ones visual and linguistic pattern recognition. Once you understand that, and practice on a few sample tests to get an idea of the types of patterns they test on, the only problem is how mind numbingly dull it is.

-Joe, the metaphor to gain understanding about moderation is right there in front of us. The neighborhood meth-head. It’s a dog eat dog world and some people don’t eat at all. And most importantly, there is always a danger present, especially concerning those involved in extending the margin of the known. For instance, when tweekers maintain extended periods of wakefulness, staying up for weeks on end, they get “spun”. It’s not a good thing. In fact you go totally crazy. Suzy is NOT recommending anyone here take methadrine to find that out, (had to put that disclaimer in for some of the easily infulanced readers), but i know that you, Joe, are able to distinguish the metaphor from the prosaic and can appreciate a simile created by a parallel awareness which expands consciousness within any jurisdiction of word usage, the juxtaposition redefining the limits of language. So, keeping that in mind, suzy is saying to go for it! BE extremely intense and outrageously unlimited, yet retain a detached composure and dignified poise. And then yes Joe, you can totally break free from the brainwash cycle, but just remember you have to maintain balance when you go into the spin cycle or else your machine will start knocking and you will end up being contacted by authorities who will put your laundry into rehab.

Speaking of this blog, since you don’t live in Southern Humboldt anymore, maybe the name of this blog should be changed? Hmmm??? How about Erik’s Eureka Blog? No…Erik’s Humboldt Blog. Hmmm??? Erik’s NoHum Blog???

I’m sure we can think of something.

I’m still spending a lot of time in Sohum, because my practice is still mostly based here. Besides, the Herald is my Nohum blog.

Good points, suzy.

In my own life, there are certain activities and interests that I take an “immoderate” approach to, at least at times, and these tend to be the activities and interests that I enjoy most, and with which I contribute most to others.

So, yeah, going to extremes can be a good thing, at least sometimes. And as far as the larger society goes, having some people who are really “way out there” can enrich all of us as well.

Taking all that into consideration, I guess I would say… even moderation should be used in moderation?
