Yes, he did serve in WWI, he lost a couple of his best friends and it affected him the for the rest of his life. The whole movie thing is kinda depressing. In fact the media itself is just locked into its formulas and has become boring beyond belief.
I also feel that the maniacal propriety of the Olympics has hurt the games more than helped. I don’t have NBC, but I thought I could follow the highlights on the news, but alas, no film is allowed. The pictures are not very good. So the effect, for me personally; is who cares? Let them protect their images and their logos and even the words themselves. It’s pretty easy to just let it go, rather than spend time and energy trying to support my country’s teams. What bits and pieces I did see show almost completely empty stands.
This commercialization of every aspect of our lives just plain sucks. The corporations don’t seem to realize that for the time being at least, no one is forcing us to watch their movies. Or their TV programs, or participate in any of the crap they want us to believe is so important to our lives. I’m amazed at how much I can do without.

Eric, well your right, its just he actually served in WWI. But the Rings books were formally written during WWII period.

I think you meant WWII Bolithio. I read somewhere that the chapter with the Balrog and the mines of Moria were inspired by Tolkien’s time in underground bomb shelters during air raids on London.

J67K; While I dont doubt Tolkien was not a promoter of war, particularly after his experiences in WWI, he certainly did not denounce battle in the Rings books. Many if not most of the cultures in his books were centered around the warrior spirit, honor, and glory. Adventure, combat, and ‘fighting’ for a greater purpose are significant themes.

Still, I agree Peter Jackson missed many of the great subtleties in the dialog of those stories for the sake of fabricated action scenes and pointless cinematic shots. And of course with Jackson as producer of the Hobbit, he let Guillermo Del Toro go as director (creative differences im sure) only to put himself in the director chair.

@Tra. That would be reacting to violence, not resorting to violence. A subtle, but very distinct difference. If, say, you invade a country because you think they might be a threat, you are a dick (and most likely a liar). If you react to a country invading you, that is a different story.

Eric, that link is F-ing hilarious!! It ‘almost’ makes me forgive you for telling me to watch “The man from Earth.” That movie is “sort of sci fi” the same way that falling is “sort of” like flying, or that climbing a rope is “sort of” like sex.

All that movie was, was an exceptionally bad episode of “Highlander” that had no sword fighting or flashbacks. The generic excuses for lack of knowledge were weak. All of the potential scientific FACTUAL questions were glossed over, then inexplicably ignored by supposed scientists. And the main character had as much depth and personality as a moldy gym sock. ZZZzzzzzz…..

@moviedad. Yes, the “Lord of the Rings” movies did kinda suck. As movies go, they were pretty entertaining & fun to watch. The fact that they completely missed the entire point of the original story is painful. They took a story about the struggle against brutality, the futility of war, and the evils of ‘retribution’ or ‘justice’, and made it into an Orc killing orgy.

Tolkien made it pretty clear that he felt (& I agree) you can never WIN a war, you can just lose it less. It is never good, or noble, or positive in any way, EVER. Asimov put it best in the foundation series “Violence is the last resort of the incompetent.”

I go back and forth. Sometimes I feel it’s all garbage, and sometimes I find a movie that doesn’t seem all that bad. And I have changed my mind on movies that I gave a bad review to way back when, “Lord of the Rings” was one that I panned for its constant violence, but years later changed my opinion after seeing it a few times. But I still stand by my opinion that every movie made for mass consumption follows Joseph Cambell’s “Hero’s Journey” to a tee. I guess my expectations are too high. There should be no limit to a Sci-Fi story line. But all too often they get watered down to just another glorification of violence and gun use and “Super-White-Man” saving the day.
