Somebody once told me about this, but words didn’t quite capture the essence. But if this is what it takes to keep two nuclear powers out of war – I won’t knock it!

LOVE THE HATS! (Was that for real, or was it a faux documentary?)

I guess Monty Python weren’t as clever as I thought. They just had very rich source material, given that India and Pakistan are demonstrations of what the colonial British instilled as proper military behavior.

Think of the tourist dollars if we did the same at Indianola and again at Philipsville. The rest of the world already thinks we’re nut why not make a buck?
I had no idea this went on. Thanks for posting the video, now I want to visit.

It’s a prettier form of diplomacy than what happens between New Delhi and Islamabad.

Preventing war?? I’d say its more like brandishing a weapon as prelude to an assault. Or provocative incitement to draw a first strike. Kinda reminds me the those large rallies in 1930′s Germany. They were also symbolic war deterring rituals, weren’t they?
Context is everything, India and Pakistan are in a continual low war, despite your fixation on pretty uniforms. US strategic interests are directly impaired as a result and US servicemen deaths have been collateral damage.
Eric, are you now a promoter of international ‘shows of force’ like sailing flotillas of warships into close proximity to borders? Worked out real well with the Puebo, Maine, and Cole didn’t it? And how about establishing military bases outside of sovereign borders as a deterrant? Hows that ‘ritual’ been working as a war alternative?

I don’t recall that the Nuremburg rallies were held jointly with Germany’s potential enemies.

The only part of this ceremony that didn’t strike me as ridiculous came at the very, very end, when the two soldiers from the two countries shook hands.

Well, now I know where Monty Python probably got the idea.

Monty Python was odd. At the time I thought that maybe I didn’t get it because I wasn’t a grown up. I still don’t get much of it.

I think the trick is to not grow up, Eric. And I would go with silly over odd (with the exception of Terry Gilliam)

Now, was Jabberwocky Monty Python, or did it just have MP actors?
