One of the things not made clear in the T-S reporting is that the larger cash donations to Estelle’s campaign, and probably the others also, was for auction items won at her Benbow and Fortuna events.

One does not “win” auction items. They pay for them.

Benbow Inn gave to both Estelle and Clif. Are they hedging their bets or do they just like both candidates?

It probably means that they support Estelle for Supervisor, but they really like Clif, wish him him well, and believe that the sun will rise on Wednesday morning in Clif wins on June 3.
I can relate.

It most likely means that Teresa and John are very generous people. They give to all sorts of fundraisers ALL the time. However they are firmly endorsing Estelle and have made that really clear.

I attended both of Fennells kickoff’s in Fortuna and in Southern Humboldt. I’m not surprised she raised a lot of $$ because there were tons of people there and tons of auction items that people or business’ donated and tons of people doing a lot of auction bidding. I have to say, both events were a lot of fun.

I see that Estelle got a big check from the prison guard union.
So when is she going to stand up for Occupy protestors? Or does she agree with Clif’s vote?
Unless she makes some kind of statement soon I won’t be voting for either of them. I’ll send some money to Mark Lovelace who had the guts to stand up for the First Amendment.

Kinda splitting hairs there, dontcha think? And perhaps you’ve never heard the phrase “the winning bid was…”
They “win” the auction by promising to pay more than anyone else was willing to pay for those items.

Many of the candidates gave loans to themselves. I wonder, do they repay their loan back to themselves from the donations of others? It appears to be so.
A few years ago, I found it unusual, and perhaps weird or strangely wise, that Terry Farmer gave a $5,000 loan to his wife, Bonnie Neely, in her re-election bid that lost. I imagine this means he got his loan money back in full, while those who donated to her campaign, didn’t. It’s an interesting move for hedging one’s bets without risking anything, as others’ private and corporate donations are following afterwards to repay the loan. It’s a clever maneuver– and not too dissimilar to a Ponzi pyramid scheme.
Only one candidate gave a donation to himself instead of a loan– Mark Lovelace.
Two candidates, Estelle Fennell and Cheryl Seidner, neither gave loans nor donations to their own campaigns.
One of the more notable observations of the Times-Standard article is the disparity of monies raised for the 1st District campaign: Rex Bohn, $142,883; Annette De Modena $25,990 (of which $22,100 was a loan she made to herself); and Cheryl Seidner, $4,274.
For the 2nd District, Estelle Fennell raised $79,171, compared to Clif Clendenen’s $51,309 (of which he repaid a loan to himself of $22,940).

Well, it’s a risk that you won’t get those donations.

Ive always wondered what happens when a candidate doesn’t spend all the money they raised. Can they just keep it?

I’m still voting for Roger Rodoni for 2nd District Supervisor. Even dead, Roger has more charisma than our two, allegedly, living candidates. Thanks for the link, BTW.
(John, I’ve edited a small portion of your post – people close to Roger read this blog, and some sensitivity to them is in order – EVK)

Bolithio:
No, they can’t just keep it. There are very strict things they can do with it. They can keep it for a future campaign, donate to other campaigns, donate to charities, etc. but put it in their pocket? No.

This bidding process, the real voting with dollars for a politician who’s holding out both hands begging like a hound, is called an “AUCTION” folks
