Lost Coast Outpost reports that former Wiyot Tribal Chair Cheryl Seidner is throwing her hat in.
A very strong candidate, but she’s over a hundred grand behind in fundraising by now. But all of the sudden nothing seems inevitable.

very strong candidate ?!?!?! I’ve lived in Humboldt over 25 years and I don’t think I’ve ever heard of her. What is her background?

She is very well known, especially in the 1st District.

I guess not Carol.
Since the Reporter closed I haven’t read a good local paper.

She is entering way late. Seem to remember this being a criteria in past Supervisor races. But Cheryl should get big dollars from the Bear River tribe. Maybe record amounts. (Bonnie Neely garnered over $25,000 from Blue Lake Tribe?) Makes this race very interesting. I haven’t heard who her team is going to be, and that should make a big difference.

I hope she can draw enough votes to cause a runoff in November. But my impression is that the first district leans conservative. So her task(as for all liberal candidates in HumCo) is to get out the vote, and that requires money and organization.
I’d like to hear some first district residents opinions about how her strong Wiyot identity will play in the vote, in light of her not being linked as a local businessperson.
I know Cheryl a little and sense she doesn’t have a really large ambition for this office. So I assume she was drafted by folks outside the first district who fear that a Bass, Sundberg, Bohn slate would do to the county what the current Eureka city council is doing to that city.

Anyone know how much she might be involved in any of the local tribal casinos?

GOOD Question: “Anyone know how much she might be involved in any of the local tribal casinos?” – As the auction of the “bought” continues.

FWIW, This news item shows the disgrace to this country that neocons have become.
I’m not surprised that it emanates from a largely rural Western State. I’m a little surprised that a ranking Federal judge was responsible. But I’m shocked that his defense is that he sent it and didn’t expect his name to be associated with it.

Though Sundberg is Native American, his personal identity is tied to his family’s local business, not his ethnicity. Think I remember that in the primary Pat Higgins received more votes in Hoopa than Sundberg. Though in the runoff, Sundberg’s majority over cleary in Hoopa was decisive. Cheryl’s identity is more clearly tied to her ethnicity.

Re: Seidner: “..drafted by folks outside the first district who fear that a Bass, Sundberg, Bohn slate would do to the county.”
Why should anyone support “folks outside the first district” backing a local candidate (Seidner) for their purposes????
Why do outsiders want to stop Bass, Sundberg and Bohn?
Is it just me, or does that sound like puppet masters involving themselves in Humboldt County affairs?
Final question: why enter the race so late? What is to be gained?
Disclaimer: I don’t have any bones to pick with either side. Just curious.

All three of them also had extra-district support. In fact, all the candidates this time around have lots of outside support. Check out the donor names.

Except maybe Mark Lovelace who really hadn’t done any fundraising up to the last report.

Dave. The question should be “why did Rex get in so early?” The filing deadline is not until March 14. Rex has already spent 50 grand and has been advertising since last June in an attempt to intimidate (bully) any opposition into staying out of the race. Cheryl is entering after the filing actually opens, a more traditional way to announce and a great way to save money. Cheryl Seidner is a proven elected leader in the First District and will make a fine addition to the board. A real local, not some Eureka pol like Rex.

I agree with Von. Cheryl’s announcement was what is typical. The fact no one knew she was going to run before that is neither here nor there.
The key to Cheryl’s campaign is who runs it and how much money she raises.

“The key to Cheryl’s campaign is who runs it ”
I agree with this part of your sentence, Jim.
“and how much money she raises.”
I really don’t know that how much the campaign raises is “key”.
There have been plent of people elected who raised less money than thier opponents. estelle versus Clif last time around, to name just one.

Von Humboldt; Annette De Modena filed early, is she being a “bully” also? mresquan; Your right about Rex’s kickoff. Because Redwood Acres is sooooo Arcata/Lovelace country, how dare he………………….

Jim…I don’t know that money makes that big an impact in a small pond election. I think door to door walking is important if you aren’t widely known. The bottom line is reputation. If you are known as an honest straight shooter it goes a long way. I also think that outside money turns off some voters. I know it does me.

It was a popular destination for hippie types when the Hawaiian restaurant was there, but it moved. Hippies aren’t much into horse racing.
Roller Derby maybe.

Dave:
While door to door is supremely important, even a basic campaign needs yard signs, bumperstickers, newspaper, radio and tv ads, mailers, etc.
To me, Cheryl has to raise at least $50K, and more likely $100K, to be heard over the tidelwave that is coming from her opponent.

Since we are ‘walking between the worlds,’ (Now), an Original/Indigenous/Indian of North America tied to her ethnicity, would get my support. I strongly feel that the blood on our generation’s hands (baby boomers) is from ‘Manifest Destiny’ i.e. genocide, and that it’s up to us to ‘claim’ and ‘return’ by ‘treaty’ the land. No one owns the earth. They, the Indians, did a MUCH BETTER job of being ‘caretakers/guardians’ while sojourning here…’spirit unto body’ projecting ourselves into this physical environment. What you won’t read in our Nazi new, new, newspapers: Ten days after the peoples republic trust served papers (took 3 1/2 hrs.!) on ACTing governor J. Brown, Attorney General Kamala D. Harris and all sitting judges in the state….the legislature voted to restore independence following Attn. General Kamala D. Harris statement: that “the Federal Government has in this matter (Medical Marijuana) clearly and repeatedly overreached its authority to regulate the life of this, our sovereign state. We have no recourse but to do what is right and depart the Union. May God have mercy on our souls, and on those who attempt to stop us in this just and holy declaration of our independence.” California seceded.
Nations, states, countries are NOT sovereign. You/me/we/us/People are ‘clothed’ in sovereignty…it’s up to us.

I wonder how many people believe that estelle in NOT an HONEST straight shooter? I am one of those.
The amount of money to run a campaign is obscene. Geez, all that money could so be better used by our schools, hospice,etc.. Maybe estelle should give the money she gets from her $25 a plate fundraiser at Benbow to SOS.

What amazes me is how no one sees how corrupt this whole discussion about buying elections is. By the way, if anyone wants to learn what bringing Native Americans to the table means, go get a job working in one of the casinos.

Per my point about a Sundberg/Bass/Bohn slate.
Tuesday the supes votes 3-2 to put Kirk Girard in charge of the new economic development department. The vote was Lovelace/Clendenen/Smith to Sundberg/Bass.
Its a sure bet that if Bohn was on the dais, the vote would have gone the other way. After all, puppetmaster Rob Arkley has made it known publically that he despises Girard.
