One of the very earliest memories I have is of the very first time I heard I heard this tune in 1964 or 65. I was just a kid of four or five and my older cousins played the Sounds of Silience and Blowin in the Wind for me and we discussed their meaning on the world, the need for peace, balance, and how so much could be accomplished if we would only consider perspectives other than our own and have compassion for those we disagree with. The profound effect of listening to these songs, at even that age totally changed and directed my adult belief structure to this day. The message of the prophets of our time, Dylan, Ochs, Garcia, Seeger, Simon and so many others have gone essentially unheeded. As a result I don’t see how we are really any better off and arguably poorer for having ignored their wisdom. Worse yet I don’t even see any new prophets rising to lead the current generations as the old are dying. One look at the turmoil and divisivness so prevalent today and no one of any faction really trying to move forward. Are we possibly just fucked?

Roger Ebert was asked if he could erase one of his reviews from the record and collective memory which it would be. His response was his review of The Graduate, for which he wrote: (paraphrasing from memory), “the musical score was generated by a completely forgettable and boring folk duo who will fade into obscurity having been granted their moment of fame and undeserved immortality.”

This song’s meaning becomes clearer after you hear the introduction giving on the early black and white video. Have we moved beyond this silence?

11:43,
Don’t worry. Every generation has prophets. Even popular ones.

Thanks for posting this, Eric! My older cousin taught me to play “Blowin’ in the Wind” on guitar, in 1963. I remember when “The Sound of Silence” was a hit on the radio; I was in 3rd grade. I have memories of swinging on the swings at recess, and singing that song to myself. I just searched the song on Wikipedia, and according to their post, Paul Simon wrote the song in the aftermath of JFK’s assassination. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I found it interesting, because JFK’s murder, in November of 1963, took place when I was in 1st grade, and I remember the teachers all crying, and telling us what had happened. Now here we are, in 2012, and not much has really changed. I’m happy to have lived to see a black man elected president, but not so happy to see the ugliness and racism that rose to the surface, shortly thereafter. Sorry about my meandering thoughts.

Yes, Mitch. Every generation throws a hero up the pop charts. Medicine is magical and magical is art. The Boy in the Bubble And the baby with the baboon heart …

Lasers in the jungle? I often get that tune in my head as I use my lasers in the woods.
