Entertainment features Fishtank Ensemble, one of the most up-and-coming musical acts on the West Coast
Sempervirens Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented to musician, activist, and film producer Darryl Cherney.
The Environmental Protection Information Center (EPIC) is excited to invite our members and the general public to the 34th EPIC Annual Meeting and Fall Celebration from 6PM – midnight on Friday, November 4th, at the Mateel Community Center, located at 59 Rusk Lane in Redway.
We are very pleased to announce that the musical entertainment for the night will feature the intoxicating sounds of Fishtank Ensemble. As one of the most exciting new groups to recently explode on the international music scene, Fishtank Ensemble will bring it’s unique blend of Romanian, Gypsy Jazz, Flamenco, Balkan, Turkish, and Tango rhythms and melodies to the Mateel stage for their only fall 2011 appearance in Humboldt County. Music is scheduled to begin at 9 PM. This high energy set will be sure to get everyone dancing, and will provide a raucous soundtrack to round out a traditionally EPIC party.
The main stage festivities will be only a part of the evening’s activities. The evening will start at 6 PM with the annual EPIC membership meeting, which will include brief updates of EPIC’s work to advocate on behalf of the globally treasured landscapes of the redwood region, as well as the nomination and election of the following year’s Board of Directors. At 7 PM a mouth-watering dinner will be served, highlighting a Mediterranean themed gourmet meal prepared by Tryphena Lewis, punctuated by a variety of fine desserts, and accompanied by excellent locally produced beers and handcrafted wines.
Ongoing through the evening there will be a silent auction for products, artwork and services from the local business and artist community, providing attendees a chance to bid on and take home an engaging array of high-value items at potentially breathtakingly affordable prices.
As well, EPIC is pleased to announce that Darryl Cherney is this year’s winner of the EPIC Sempervirens Lifetime Achievement Award, joining a long list of community members whose efforts to protect and restore the environment of our bioregion merit distinction and recognition. Darryl is a renowned Earth First! troubadour who has recorded dozens of unforgettable songs that capture the life essence of redwood activists. Darryl has in the last several years demonstrated a spectacular diversity of talents in the process of making the film Who Bombed Judi Bari?, a soon-to-be-released work that will prove to be one of the definitive documentaries of the redwood region. We are very proud to present the Sempervirens Award to Darryl at this year’s annual meeting.
Advance tickets to the celebration will be available at local outlets such as Redway Liqour and Blue Moon Gift Shop in Southern Humboldt, as well as at the Works in Eureka and at the EPIC office in Arcata, located at145 G St, Suite A, by the Arcata Marsh. Darryl Cherney is the best they could do for their annual award? They must have read Darryl’s Wikipedia page where he claims to be co founder of the Headwaters Reserve. Total B.S. .

Dave, How do you know Darryl wrote or has even read his own wikipedia page? Anyone has access to it and ability to post, as you know. The Sarah Palin hoopla over Paul Revere’s ride and her supporters trying to change the wikipedia page to revise history was a great example of that.
I’ve heard him boast a lot but never that one. He is, however, co-initiator with Greg King of the campaign against MAXXAM. But the reserve is the bastard child of Diane Feinstein and Headwaters activists, vigorously opposed it in it’s current form. Estelle’s old and venerable KMUD news reports could tell you that. So it’s unlikely he would have phrased it that way.
I checked and Darryl has his own bio on his website darrylcherney.com. Read what he says about himself to give him some hell rather than what someone else might have written about him, quite likely.

Skunk…You’re trying to tell me that Cherney hasn’t read his own Wiki page. The man is a media monkey !!!! I don’t agree with your post.

I don’t want to get into defending Darryl, but you should just ask Darryl rather than speculate publicly. And you don’t refute the possibility that he didn’t write it. And if you don’t think he should win the sempervirens award, then cite a reason other than what someone else might have written about him. The media, including and especially web media, get it wrong a lot. And not all of us have the time to correct every error. I’m not really into defending Mr. Cherney here, just trying to be fair.

S…It turns out Darryl wrote his own Wiki page. Darryl has always been a master of self promotion. Just a little loose with the facts. I spoke with a lady who worked at the Woodrose back in the old days. She didn’t care for Darryl because he used to come in and empty the Earth First donation jar and pay for his breakfast with the money. Its always been about Darryl. Darryl First!

How do you know that Darryl wrote his own wiki page? Please enlighten. And it doesn’t make sense that anyone with a lick of sense would empty a donation jar and pay for breakfast with it. Sounds like gossip. You’re telling us what someone else told you decades ago. I doubt there would be enough money in the donation jar to pay for a breakfast at the Woodrose anyway
.
Again, your missives are devoid of any facts that could be cleared by actually contacting Darryl rather than just put out unsubstantiated allegations. Did you go to his own website darrylcherney.com to cross reference with wiki? I have and it’s different than wikipedia. You should add factual research to your repertoire rather than engaging in public gossip.

S…Wiki will tell you who originated a page. Hello Darryl…Skunk must be your most recent incarnation. All will be revealed.

The Woodrose story is not gossip. The woman who told me about Darryl buying breakfast with donation money was a waitress working there and saw Darryl do it. She is a long standing and respected member of this community. She related this story a few years ago. I choose to believe her.

No not Darryl. But sincerely, how do you find out inside the wiki page who wrote something. I’d like to know. I tried but couldn’t do it.

Kirby, Finally figured out how to look at an entry history to Wikipedia. It is clear that Darryl had no part in posting it and yet you just fasely claimed he did. Care to explain? Salix Alba is a professor somewhere and look how many edits! Shame on you, Dave, for making things up.

S….The June 25 lewiskir entry was me trying to correct Daryl’s claim that he “founded” headwaters. Which was undone. Now that we have brought this fraud to light why hasn’t Daryl corrected the page? You can’t expect any one to believe Cherney does not know whats on his own Wiki page. Nor do I believe that some third party decided to post this crap.

How do you know that salix alba (latin name for White Willow btw) is a professor somewhere?

Plain Jane
Dave Kirby, when you repeat gossip with no personal knowledge of its veracity, it’s still gossip regardless how trustworthy you think the original source was. I don’t have a high opinion of Cherney, but repeaters of gossip don’t rate any higher.

Anonymous,
Somehow I stumbled on the wiki source page and clicked on the sources for the Cherney page. The links to the contributors had a photo and bio on the contributor.
I think the point is that Dave Kirby told an outright falsehood that Darryl had created his own wiki page. If he did not tell the truth about that, why should we believe the Woodrose Gossip. It was a conscious and clearly stated misrepresentation. Careless, too.
Now that he is outed as telling falsehoods, he criticizes Cherney for not correcting it. And tries to out me as Darryl without really addressing the issue that he is just making things up. Fixing the page–that is a process that requires a bit of doing, and Dave can go fix it, though he seems to prefer others to do work.
So while Dave carries on with an unlikely smear story that Darryl bought a breakfast (cost $10 perhaps) with “contribution can” money, the big guys make off with billions. We can see where Dave’s priorities lie. Bullying the locals who are trying to do some good.
