Confirming that somewhere some beings may be enjoying a double (or multiple?) sunset. Assuming they perceive light as we do.

And assuming they like sunsets. Maybe it gets cold when the suns set. It is interesting to imagine the variations on sunsets they could have, though. Imagine that each sun has a different spectrum of light, which is probable. The light mix would vary as one or the other moved lower in the sky, and then set. And if the orbit allows for the variation, one might set earlier than the other sometimes, then vice versa. By the way, what would a year be in such a system? And all this assumes that the planet goes around both suns at once. Suppose a kind of figure 8 orbit – what would that do? Well, I guess it’s a wait and see situation.

What the heck man?! What about the “Twin Earth/Solar System” I’ve been hearing about? It’s amazing how respected scientists are starting to sound Arthur C Clarke. I think we are living in the greatest age of discovery since the 16th century. Look how Hubble has opened up possibilities and let loose a whole new set of theories about what might actually be out there. Or even what might be in “here”.
Thanks for the post….

Ed – no, it’s one orbit around the center of gravity between the two stars. The video contains a depiction. But good points as to whether a sunset would have quite the same potential of romance on every planet.
There is an excellent short story by Isaac Asimov entitled “Nightfall” which some claim to be the best short science fiction story ever written. I don’t know about that, but I would say it’s the best I’ve read. Unfortunately, both attempts at movies based on the story were lame – missing the whole point. It deals with religious resistance to science, the politics of impending catastrophe, denial, etc.
The backdrop is a society on a planet in a multi-sun system where there are always suns in the sky except that once every 2000 years or so the alignment is such that all of the stars end up on one side of the planet and it gets dark. And every time it happens, everyone on the planet goes collectively mad, but still manage to reproduce and recover as a society with strict religious rituals to guide them. Scientists on this particular cycle manage to figure it out, using a combination of hastily developed science and evidence of prior collapsed civilizations, and try to work out a plan to prevent total loss this time around. It deals with the massive denial and the writing really picks up as the last sun is making its way down to the horizon and the sky begins to darken. It’s immaculately written right to the last sentence.
What about the “Twin Earth/Solar System” I’ve been hearing about?
Haven’t heard about that, but I do remember a movie about it. One theory is that the Big Bang, being perfectly symmetrical, led to mirror images in the expanding globe-shaped universe, so that somewhere on the other side are exact replicas of everything, but in reverse. Somewhere, there is a left handed Eric Kirk (or Krik Cire) typing this post in reverse.

“Nightfall” is a wonderful story. I’ve often wondered what the analog here on “our” earth would be. Probably the galactic spin takes us suddenly to a place where the night time sky is completely empty and we suddenly have this feeling that we’re alone.

Video reminds me of the days when I was a kid with t.v. and in advertisements, they’d show a cartoon, say for instance of a razor shaving a whisker up close and say “Here’s proof.”
Our only advance we have is that now they show computer generated cartoons which look much more realistic.
