Today’s news is that the killer was protecting his garden – his opium poppy garden – and not a marijuana grow. I suppose this means federal raids on florists and seed companies?

These stories are scary for us woodsworkers… Lions, tigers, and gardens!

Better follow-up story from yesterday and this morning.

One of the better and more insightful local articles I’ve read is yesterday’s Ukiah Daily Journal piece, here .
Bassler’s father weighs in on his son: his history, mental health issues, and that’s he probably schizophrenic. The article was fairly well written and informative, lending some answers and partial clarity about the suspect’s state of mind and tragedy.
(Hat tip to reader LKBlog and Kym Kemp’s site, Redheaded Blackbelt for the inital source)

This story is more about the inadequacies of our mental health and criminal justice systems than it is about marijuana.

pathetic actually
LA Times link appears to be broken. P-D link is to a story about pot growers and danger of shooting, but I see NO mention of the Melo affair. And from I can gather, ED’s comment above says it all–this is not a story about pot growers, dangers or any such thing. It’s about this guy’s OPIUM garden. Are you sure you want to be part of the conflation of pot growers and opium poppy cultivation?

Urgent HEADS UP for folks in the Shelter Cove / Whitethorne area:
Aaron Bassler, the suspect wanted in the recent Mendecino homicides of Jere Melo and Matthew Coleman, has reportedly been seen in the Chemise Mtn. Rd. area, and deputies are searching for him in the area.
More information, and photo / wanted poster, go here:

Oops, looks like that might have been a False Alarm. Kym has updated her post with this:
UPDATE: MIKE DOWNEY SAYS THEY HAVE NO CREDIBLE INFORMATION THAT BASSLER IS IN THE COUNTY!

Readers, there’s another side of Aaron Bassler’s story as evidenced by the rare photo seldom seen or published of him today by local Kym Kemp (http://kymkemp.com/2011/10/04/aaron-bassler-a-mental-health-tragedy/ )
A young man graduating, full of hope and dreams dressed in a tux, someone’s loved son and taken care of, smiling. A very different view than how we might remember Aaron Bassler of late.
Her Redheaded Blackbelt site has the unusual photo and article of Aaron in his happier and healthier days– and the failure of the mental health system and courts to intervene– in the article “Aaron Bassler– “A Mental Health Tragedy?”
Please give it a read or comment. It’s a different side of his story needing to be told. Thank you.
