And I don’t think there will be any Prop 8 counterpart in that state. California should be ashamed.

New York doesn’t have a mechanism similar to California’s referendum and ballot initiative procedures. So there can’t be a prop 8 counterpart, regardless.

California should be ashamed? And why is that Eric? For passing prop 215 (by a slim margin) ? Or should California be ashamed for not doing what you think they should ? How dare the people, the government not go the way that Eric goes ?

California should be ashamed for passing Proposition 8, just as any community or political entity should be ashamed of enacting legislation that goes against the principles of liberty and justice for all.

Only 52.24% of Californian VOTERS should be ashamed. The rest of us voters voted against Prop 8. Those that didn’t vote should probably share some of the blame, because they probably would have voted that they just don’t care what other people do anyway.
As a happily married man to a woman, I don’t feel one speck threatened by Gay Marriage. I don’t get why anyone should care, how does one peoples happiness affect others?

Ernie,
I often suspect that those most shrilly against gay marriage fear that no man and woman will ever get together to raise children once gay people nationwide have the right to marry. Why they would view a homosexual marriage option as such powerful competition to the heterosexual marriage option is for them to figure out, perhaps with the help of counseling. Of course you are right, gay marriage has never been a threat to anyone.
Gay rights and gay marriage have “tipped” from the sort of issues where “respectable” people might come down on different sides to the sort of issues where “respectable” people all recognize that gay rights are simply human rights, and there is no “respectable” opposition, just bigotry. Grandpa Joe still thinks it’s wrong, and we’ve given up arguing with him, but we no longer think Grandpa Joe’s opinion on the issue has its own validity, just like Great Grampa John’s tirades about miscegenation are no longer viewed as a reasonable, if minority, view with regard to interracial marriage.
As is generally the case, the former Confederacy is bringing up the rear. It’s been a pretty fast transition, so it may be a while before the Confederacy catches up.
What’s embarrassing is that Southern California dumped California in with the former Confederacy at such a late date in this social transition. Aside from the Mormon Church, the Southern California fundamentalist Christians probably played a role.

blah blah blah,
It was a fair vote but you *&%’s only like a fair vote when it goes your way. You are the one’s that should be ashamed, and yes I know you will hate me for saying that. I’m actually OK with that.

“As is generally the case, the former Confederacy is bringing up the rear.”
You can say that again. And I’ll second what Ernie said.

Yes it was a fair vote, only in the fact that the ballots were accurately counted. But many votes for the proposition were because of massive lies promulgated by the proposition’s proponents, massively funded by the Catholic and Mormon churches.
But the state should be ashamed, and those who voted for Prop 8 should be ashamed for the same reason as if they would have voted to prevent non-Christians from holding office or preventing mixed-race marriages.
They should be ashamed because they voted for a proposition that was caused by sheer hatred, despite their pius lies about it being about religion and the protection of marriage. That proposition didn’t protect anyone or anything.
And no, I don’t hate you; I pity you.
