I received an email about my post below in which I mentioned the crowd at Venlo’s. Apparently my patronage of the business nails me as a newcomer progressive as opposed to an old guard conservative, or something along those lines. “True Eurekans” buy from Partricks.
Two points. First, I don’t live in Eureka, so I’m neither a neo-Eurekan nor a paleo-Eurekan.
Secondly, I have bought items from both stores. I don’t eat much candy these days, so I’m not in either establishment frequently. But I haven’t noticed that any particular demographic favors one over the other. Venlo’s makes the best hot chocolate I’ve had. Partrick’s offers items other than chocolate.
It’s candy folks. They both sell candy.
Sheesh.

Please, God, let Venlo’s win.

As a child Partrick’s seemed really good, but we didn’t have a very wide frame of reference. I received a box of Partrick’s candy this year and, sad to say, it wasn’t very good, seemed a little stale, not even as good as Sees.

Well, look. You go to each for different experiences. Venlo’s (formerly Sjaak’s) are chocolateers who sell premium gourmet chocolates and specialize in chocolate molds for very special gifts.
Partrick’s is an excellent candy store where you bring your kids for a reward after a good day cleaning up the yard.
If you’re in old town where you go to dinner has as much to do with your mood and momentary needs as much as quality and price. The Avalon and Lost Coast Brewery are about a block away from each other, but they don’t compete with each other. Sometimes I like a good trout almondine with a nice glass of pinot noir. Other times when I’d rather splurge on calories than money, a juicy cheeseburger with a tall stiff beer hits the spot.
I think the two candy shops compliment each other and combined provide a complete local alternative to See’s.

Thanks for the post Eric. I do not see see the connection myself, but if any group of people could make shopping for candy political, it is my people here in Eureka.

I’m really sorry to hear that. I hope Partrick’s and the other businesses such as the camera shop remain intact.

I put this on Twitter last night. It was the old Yen Ching place that caught fire. Swnalunds and the other adjacent buildings did not appear to have any damage.

Oh, no! On recommendations from posters here, I recently tried Yen Ching’s and loved the food and the family service. I hope they get back up and running!
