Here is their election news page, which includes their endorsements – all for the progressives except that they support the conservative for Eureka Mayor.

Perhaps the most telling fact about the Times Standard endorsements is unsuprisingly not in the paper. For the first time in the hundred plus years of the paper existance, the Times Standard editorial board did not even bother to interview all the candidates. Apparently they knew who they wanted to endorse even without talking to them.
I don’t know if Dean Singleton has any ethical standards at all but he should be embarressed to have his name associated with a newspaper that is capable of such misconduct. For that matter we should all be ashamed. I have started an informal survey of medium sized papers across the state and have collected 25 responses so far and none, as in exactly zero of them provide endorsements without a specific endorsement interview. Not a single one. The Times Standard stands alone in it’s blatent disregard of basic journalistic values.
This has nothing to do with their choices though I am admittedly unhappy with some. My displeasue lies in the total lack of integrity and the arrogance exhibited by the Times Standard staff. They couldn’t even bring themselves to pretend that the fix wasn’t in.

It’s probably a good idea to conduct interviews, but it’s really only an issue if they are misrepresenting the candidates’ views. Have they done that? Otherwise, I think it’s fair to decide whether to support a candidate based upon their public perception and public record. I didn’t interview the candidates before making up my mind. Did you?

Humboldt gets a mention during this clip:
http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/11/zach-galifianakis-lights-a-joint-during-prop-19-debate-video.php?ref=fpb
The commentator says that growers in Humbolt County are organizing against Prop 19.
At any rate, it’s fun to watch the taboo being broken right there on the air.

Individuals can make up their minds about a candidate for any reason or for no reason at all. I have spoken to some candidates and not others but I am not a newspaper. I do not represent myself as an unbiased source of news and opinion. I do not have a well founded industry standard existing for generations that says, yes, trust us, we will do our homework. That’s what The Times Standard does, they in essence say “you can trust us”. That is the very basis of a newspaper’s relationship with the community, that they will stay unbiased and outside the fray. That’s why most reporters will not even let you buy them a soda, because even the slightest thing could give the perception of bias and ruin their reputation of objectivity. That’s over a soda. This situation is incalcuably worse. Not even speaking to candidates for public office and then telling the community “trust us, we’re objective, we will help you make the right choice, you should vote the way we say cuz we really know the scoop”. It’s doumbfounding that supposed journalists would even consider such a thing.
By the way, I called seven more papers about the size of the Times Standard this morning, they ALL have a long held police of interviewing ALL the candidates. One editor even made a point of telling me that for every election in their town they reinterview the the same three homeless guys that have filed in every race for years, they just meet them outside. Tiny papers probably can’t meet the standard of having an official editorial board but I betcha even Kevin Hoover spoke to Geronimo.
“…it’s really only an issue if they are misrepresenting the candidates’ views. ” Thats kinda one of the main points. Without an interview how do they even know what those views are? From candidates mailers and advertising? Hardly. From reading the blogs? From our local debates? Don’t be ridiculous. Finding out their views is exactly why they have held interviews for a hundred years. So YES, it’s an issue.
