One point about legalization is that it will bring the industry into the realm of all other business, and you’ll be able to sue a neighbor just as if he or she was running a pig farm in a residential neighborhood. Expect more lawsuits like this one, even if the special nuisance statute no longer applies.

southern humboldt talks a lot about being environmental, but only if it doesn’t interfere with their income.
The 400 plants on an acre of land that the Humboldt Growers Assoc. is talking about, is what, 400 pounds, or more?

Just the same as if your neighbor wanted to rezone a pig farm into a year round boogie fest? : A use of property or course of conduct that interferes with the legal rights of others by causing damage, annoyance, or inconvenience.
The Tooby Ranch had been zoned AE since AE became a zone in Humboldt County. The neighboring property owners had known this and could live with AE, but now the pbod wants to change all of that AE noise with even louder music and the sound of bus’s, car’s, RV’s, people and more people. Yeah now that is a nuisance all right. Bring on the legal growers, they don’t make any noise like the pitter patter thump bang boom of boogie goer’s.
And JFYI, what happens when the pbod rezones from AE to whatever for
whatever and then pot becomes legal? Will the pbod have to rezone the land again to make more money growing legal weed than off boogie days and boogie nights? Have you thought about that wink wink? I mean the CP has some of the best and largest area of soils, sun and water in all of Humboldt and you are only using 10 to 15 acres out of 400 now? What the hell are you thinking?

What gets me is that the real bad-doer, the one what annoyed the neighbors directly [the grower] got off scott-free and the landlord has to pay a big bill. My smypathies are more with the landlord. They’re certainly not with law enforcement in this case when they inadequately responded to complaints and illegalities.

anonymous, on the flipside you’ve got the galvanized movement to pave it all for mega-villages…just forego the environment altogether, or in the very least pretend it was never ‘environment’ to begin with. If Humboldt is going to grow, let it do so literally…agriculture is the way to go locally, and I’d include marijuana cultivation. It’s much easier on everybody’s environment than parking lots next to buildings, delivered by the ‘business’ flipside that you completely ignore in your make to hate on your proverbial ‘growers’.

There’s a lot of space and better places between S.F. and SoHum to pave over and put mega villages before little teeny Garberville. Creating a scary boogyman is a cheap trick to silence and ridicule those who say the truth.
And in fact, demand for and production of paved over megavillages is declining since ‘smart growth’ is beoming fashionable and more economic than sprawl. Statewide, population growth is slowed to less than 2% and is projected to level out in 30 years.
But un-named’s fear based strategy that ‘the barbarians are coming’ serves all manner of selfish purposes from preemptive wars to condoning environmentally destructive pot growing. In both cases its all about the money, as anon 8:55 correctly points out.

NAN, you’re smart enough to know you’re putting lots of words in my mouth. Also, declined demand, as you put it, hasn’t changef the fact that they’re always knocking loudly on the redwood door…couple of paved over megavillages are hot topics right now, you know that as well. They’re the latest in the conveyor belt availability of population bombs any big real estate investor can’t wait to wrap their wallets around. You’re well aware they’re opening up ‘infrastructure’ on our county borders etc, and I’d like to think you’re smart enough to know what I’m trying to communicate about it, rather than to throw your wet sock at me.
You disagree that agriculture would be better planning for our current open space than urban infrastructure? I see no conspiracy or ulterior motive right now but that plans are on the table, they’re very urban and they have permanent effect. Isn’t it up to us to guide those plans to suit the future’s best interests?
This is all besides that I’ve been merely pointing out the flipside to the nonsense rhetorical argument of environmentally hazardous ‘growers’ rampant in the hills everywhere, all the time. For crying out loud, you’re not even crying wolf, you’re crying sheep. You read like the bandwagon when you write like that.

More pure BS fabrication No one is ‘knocking on the door’, that’s just a lie or paranoia. Where are the facts? PALCO couldn’t even begin to start their rural kingdom idea. If you’re referring ot the development proposed right at the Eureka city limits as a megavillage, you’re off by a few decimal places. Its more like hundreds of residences over a 20 year period. which averages as dozens a year and they’re right next to a urban area, not way off in the hills And the proposal isn’t paved over suburbia, more like ‘smart growth’.
Fact is, HumCo population has been essentially flat for 15 years and is projected to grow at only a 1% rate. SoHum will probably lose population as the 60′s hippies there die off or go to nursing homes while pot prices tumble.
So keep up the name calling and BS but you’ve got no facts, just a lot of hate and fear expressed with tired out old culture war rhetoric.
If you want to get agro about SoHum development, how about the development proposed by the SHCP? They want to rezone property away from agricultural exclusive use. Now thats knocking right on your back door. But I suspect since evil ‘outsiders’ aren’t behind it and big $$ will accrue to the ‘right’ people, you’re AOK with that.

I live in Redway and I sometimes have the same fears, that robbers will try and get my neighbors plants through my property. There are large amounts of plants growing all over town, some of them visible from the road. I dislike the smell and fear crimes that might be associated with all these valuable plants. I don’t grow it or use it, so it’s really too much to tolerate. Maybe the non grower Redway residents should have a meeting. I wouldn’t tolerate a pig farm, so why should I tolerate this? And pig farms don’t bring crime to our neighborhoods. The dozens of transients in our community drawn here because they think they can get jobs is another issue. These big growers sure better kick back some of their income to the community as those of us with legal jobs sure put up with a lot.

California is going up by 9% in the same period. Census.gov says Redding is up by 10%, Santa Rosa by 11%.

The problem in SoHum and many other places, neighborhoods and communities have allowed this kind of underground economy to flourish and after years of benefiting from it, what gives you the right to blow the whistle, well everything does. Everything hits a bottom. I’m not really sure what you guys are arguing about, but the future plan here in Garberville is urban sprawl, courtesy of the leapfrog development projects of GSD and Southern Humboldt Community Park, and their beneficiaries. We would do well to take care or we’re gonna end up just like Santa Rosa, or Sacramento…. with a dry river like the Los Angeles Riverbed. Developers are the deciders, the public is left trying to get out of their driveways and wondering what happened.
Please Pay Attention. Go to GSD meetings (nobody can get into the SHCP meetings). Go to the GSD SOI meetings, too. Proposed Urban Sprawl will be sucking the River dry unless we take care of where we live.
