What’s in his severance package?

What’s in his severance package? Probably a good health care plan, something he made sure that the rest of us would never have.

Hey: He’s from Chicago, just like Obama and many others in the White House now. Chicago: Probably the most politically corrupt place in the nation (aside from San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York).
What’s your beef with Emmanuel? I would think he’d be a homey to you.

He single-handedly killed meaningful health care reform, made sure there were few teeth in the finance reform bill, and pretty much helped the Republicans obstruct progress for two years. I’m hoping Obama is cleaning house and opening himself up to some more progressive voices. Getting rid of Emmanuel and Summers is encouraging.

Rahm is a fucking retard.

“Getting rid of Emmanuel…is encouraging.”
Rham Emmanuel is leaving to run for Mayor of Chicago…so no, I don’t think it’s a question of Obama kicking him to the curb, nor is it likely to be part of any.
Nor do I think Emmanuel is responsible for Obama caving in on health care, financial reform or other important matters, those kinds of decisions can only come from the top. I think Emmanuel is a convenient scapegoat that Obama offers up to his critics from the left when he decides to cave in to the interests of corporate power — as if Emmanuel somehow had the power to overrule the President and cut deals against the President’s wishes. Nonsense.

…nor is it likely to part of any meaningful shift in the way the Obama administration does business.

Fred would think, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Plain Jane
Illinois ranks #18 in corruption, far behind North Dakota, Alaska and Louisiana when measured per capita, the only fair way to do so.

Stereotypes never die however, but you’re right. Chicago’s corruption often involves charismatic figures and media-interest intrigue, but the quiet corruption is much more pervasive and frequent, and probably more prevalent in rural areas where social dynamics work to protect the perps.

Reasonable you have no clue as to what you are talking about. Emmanuel was the point man for the administration, he whipped together the negotiators during the health care debate and his orders were the orders of the day. He did his job and did it well which means he pissed off a lot of people from all across the political spectrum.

But according to Joe Lieberman, Emmanuel nor anybody else from the administration even bothered to call him to pressure him on the public option. I think that was Emmanuel’s call.

Rahm was a catastrophe. He was also Obama’s pick, so the issues lie at both their feet.

“…his orders were the orders of the day.”
No doubt. But bottom-line, Obama was responsible for deciding what policies they would really push for and if/when they would cave. If he ceded that role to his chief of staff, well that’s on him, too. So if you think things came out well on health care, financial regulatory reform, etc., then Obama deserves most of the credit…conversely if you don’t think they did as well as they could have, Obama deserves the lion’s share of the blame. Again, the chief of staff works for the president and follows the president’s lead on policy, not the other way around (or if it IS the other way around, well that would be a pretty serious problem).
