A case in which a suspect, already on probation and with a prior DUI conviction, hits and kills a pedestrian crossing the roadway in a crosswalk in downtown Eureka. The suspect faced a potential prison term of 2 – 6 years; however, a plea agreement was reached resulting in a 1 – year jail term and additional count of felony probation.
A case in which a suspect, on parole, brandished a firearm at a citizen. Officers subsequently located the suspect parolee who was still in possession of the firearm and ammunition. The suspect received a plea agreement of 16 months in prison versus the 6 – 9 years he could have received upon a jury conviction.
The Eureka Police Officers Association firmly believes that District Attorney Candidate Allison Jackson will bring much needed professional change to the District Attorney’s Office if elected.
The Eureka Police Officers Association strongly urges citizens to vote for Allison Jackson for Humboldt County District Attorney.

This race is particularly interesting and even weird in it’s dynamics. Personally, I lean very slightly towards Jackson not because I believe that she will do a great or even so so job but because I believe that Gallegos has shown consistantly poor judgement both in the courtroom and in the management of his office. This has been validated by year after year of Grand Jury reports, failed litigation, and now the unanimous endorsement of his opposition by every single law enforcement union in the county. Throw in the AFSCME endorsement to Jackson and the fact that Gallegos, as the incumbant couldn’t even get the Democratic endorsement leads me to believe that there is an almost total lack of confidence in Gallegos. Even were he capable, which is questionable, no one could effectivly do the job with so little community support. Jackson has some serious issues but is generally qualified and experienced if a bit big headed. I don’t see how it could be worse though I acknowledge those are famous last words. It seems like it’s just time to try someone new.
In some respects the returns in this race will be the most fun to watch.

The police organizations have been backing Gallegos’ opponents in every election from the beginning. When are they going to realize that in Humboldt County their endorsements are actually detrimental to their candidates?

I’m still not voting for her. I’m not thrilled with Paul, but I find Jackson a little creepy.

I don’t think whomever wins this race will have any real effect on anything we do.
Whatever the call.

Nothing wrong with just standing aside in a given race and not voting. I do it fairly often.

That kind of thinking has ruined this country.

“…the returns in this race will be the most fun to watch.”
The whole campaign will be “the most fun to watch”. It’s like the plot of a mystery movie. Who contributed the most to the campaign? What are the demographics of the voting? The fact that major corporations might not be a factor…Or, maybe the big tobacco companies, that will be growing marijuana after prop 19 passes/fails will be a factor.
I love to watch the lawyers hedge their opinions of candidates. Like, for one small segment of their life they have to have opinions like real people, because they might not know who they will be facing in the D.A’s office. Humbling I’m sure.
Can Southern Humboldt sway the vote, as in the past? Who was it that said “break out the popcorn?”

Can Southern Humboldt sway the vote,
Only if Southern Humboldt turns out, and based on my radio show the other night, I think Sohum is as apathetic as ever this cycle – Prop 19 and all.
