I don’t want to make any further comments on my own behalf, as I’ve said what I want to say and some posters insist on hearing something else. However, on my point about the need of some for the the experience of the extreme, a letter to the NJC by one Susan Cooper expresses my point in more concise eloquence. Under the heading “Hang your Head” there are a number of angry letters, but I’m glad this one won the ice cream. I was particularly impressed with this paragraph in describing what she told her inquiring children.
I gave it my best shot, and said that maybe a person pulls such shenanigans when they are not able to let their life be enough. I told them that we live in a society of many lost souls who are seeking bigger, louder, sexier, scarier, kinkier thrills. I told them that there is relentless, impossible beauty and pain, side by side, every day.
Bodes well for the perpetuation of the species.
