Yeah, throw gold into the mix. That’s always been a key ingredient in a recipe for peace!

Well, at least the Afghanis won’t have to worry about a lack of “help” from the major powers.

I can see us staying in Afghanistan longer because of this new developement.
Our government is going to want a piece of the action. We’re talking big money and that’s more than enough to motivate our politicos.
Maybe the Afghans will out source the mining and Americans could apply for jobs!

I won’t be a bit surprised if it comes out that this has been known by both the US and Russia for many years.

Apparently they knew at least two years ago.

Since they haven’t had much time for prospecting, I’m wondering if it was literally uncovered by the “daisy cutter” bombings during the initial invasion.

Minerals eh? Sounds like our troops will be “hanging out” for a while to help the Afghan government unearth these resources. I believe I read that this find could create a substantial mining center in the country, which means even more a reason to “stabilize” the country for American business interests.

Maybe even bombing of geologically interesting areas for that purpose.

Hey, if they practiced “mountaintop removal,” those pesky Taliban dudes wouldn’t have anyplace to hide, right?

There’s the distinct odor of the bottom of a cavalry officer’s boot to that NYT piece.
Dave is closest to the real reason for it; to keep the home fires burning for more war. Remember how US firms were going to reap all those lucrative oil contracts in Iraq. Whatever minerals might be there, don’t be too surprised when China gets the deal. We are not Karzai’s BFF anymore.

First off, there’s lotsa lithium. So aside from a great big happy for GM, this means the US can tell Lula to go fuck himself and his peasantry and the horses they still ride in on because even with Lula, they still can’t afford cars.
Second. I’m offering a prize* for the best explanation of why wordpress related this post to “Recipe: Shrimp Alfredo” and “Electronic Recipe Reader.”

“…for Afghanis to fight about.” Erik I am shocked at you. It is now, and always has been outside forces who’ve created wars for the Afghans. You promote propaganda when you paint them as a quarrelsome race. We’d be pretty damn quarrelsome too if we had to endure the countless invasions from outside foreign powers as they have.
June 15, 2010 at 8:03 am
Eric Kirk
Well, first off, they’re not a race. They’re actually a complex mixture of several different tribal ethnicities, which exist in surrounding nations as well. Secondly, there are many countries who’ve endure even more invasions. But these are tribal rivalries which persist with or without outside influences, and have for centuries. In large part, it’s the religion. But there’s much more too it, which predates us, the Soviets, and even the British empire.

I didn’t mean “Race” in the strictest sense. And I don’t really understand what you mean. No big…
June 15, 2010 at 8:44 pm
Eric Kirk
Well, the point is that the tribal wars at play are centuries old. Almost a millennium in some cases.

As I understand it the Chinese have already been granted permission to open an Iron mine by the Afgan govt. A “Daisy Cutter” is a bomb designed to detonate above ground. In Nam we welded lengths of pipe to the to the nose of bombs to achieve this. It would be the least likely type of ordinance to uncover mineral deposits. The fact is we had preliminary maps and info left by Russian geologists that had been confidential until our people could confirm the extent of the various deposits.
