I just haven’t had the time to sit down and do one myself, but Heraldo did a very good job summing it up. As Heraldo notes, it was the most contentious of the debates so far, at least between Jackson and Gallegos.
More debates to come up, including a discussion format next Thursday on KHUM which will take a format very distinct from the debates so far in encouraging direct interaction between the candidates. I’ll post more information soon.

Jackson makes a compelling case regarding the animal abuse cases (among others). Gallegos should have responded to her comments.

gallegos was incredulous when asked to talk about his 3 top $$contributers. he sounded so lame claiming he didn’t know about them and he hemmed and hawed and then claimed that he didn’t Want to know who they are so they’ll be “distance” between them. lame ..
he knows full well that his top contributors are him self and another family member.
I also appreciated that Allison Jackson pointed out that if Paul kept better tabs on his ‘armed code enforcement” and what they were up to, those altercations with the citizenry would never have happened. and she added that would never happen on her watch. She said that she never would have given them guns and that they should be like any of the other civil departments where they contact you by phone and make an appointment with you if they have questions on possible building “infractions”.

Heraldo – she was referring to a specific case back in 2006. I think we had some intense threads about it on this blog. The problem is that a candidate’s debate isn’t really the best forum to discuss the merits of a particular case, although certainly the way the media covered it sounded horrible. I believe Heather Muller covered the story for the Eureka Reporter. I believe at the time Gallegos said that the evidence which the investigation had uncovered simply didn’t warrant the charges which some were demanding, and that can be very complicated and difficult to explain in a 30 second rebuttal.
Allison may know more about the case as well. She was certainly very passionate about it. And from what I remember of the story, it was a horrible situation. But I don’t remember that all the details were clear as to the notice the DA’s office had.

Re: code enforcement, note that Allison didn’t say what the county would do if you didn’t return their calls and set up an appointment.
It’s easy for her to take potshots at Gallegos over this issue, but I didn’t hear one word from her while the actual controversy was going on. Didn’t hear from her at any of the hearings or Code Enforcement Task Force Meetings.
My guess is that if Jackson was the D.A. at the time, she would have sided 100% with the cops. After all, that’s her base.
Gallegos deserves the heat he’s taken for ever allowing the no-accountability structure to exist for years while he was in office, right up to the point where it all came to a head.
But he also deserves credit for coming to Garberville and taking the heat, and then acting swiftly to take away the guns. I really doubt we would have gotten any better performance from either Jackson or Hagen.

They’ve had those guns since long before Gallegos was elected.

Will Eric be asking Hagen about his experience prosecuting violent crimes?
Will someone ask if ANY of these three have ever been arrested for a DUI?

Jackson has said that she believes Code Enforcement needs to go after every single unpermitted building in the county.

Would you like to see the CD of Shannon Miranda when he entered the Trinity County property where the dogs where found? I will gladly show it to you. Before you comment on this case perhaps you should know the details. And let me point out this case was talked about in detail on my radio show on KMUD a few years ago. My guest was a former prosecutor who works for the Animal Legal Defense Fund, Dana Campbell. She explained in detail why Gallegos was negligent and failed to prosecute the case. She also pointed out that “Lucky” was originally found leaning on her poop then later found in Blue Storage containers along with many other dogs. It is shown on the CD! Gallegos had significant evidence from the Sheriffs and animal welfare community to prosecute but clearly stated in the papers that Roberta KiKi Bugenig had a mental illness and could not do anything while she lived in Humboldt County. The animals where alive here!!!! And found dead in Trinity!!! This case is covered in detail on animalabuse.com see link
Roberta Kiki Bugenig was never charged for animal abuse. The last thing I heard that she took a chain saw to a horse in Shasta County. I meet one of the Deputy DAs in Shasta County at a recent Animal Law Conference I attended last October, he stated to me he never heard the case nor did he know who she was. And for the record the Eureka Reporter did an excellent job reporting this story.

Also the Animal Legal Defense Fund offers free legal assistance from Animal Law Attorneys. Gallegos has refused this help.

Barbara,
Did you invite Gallegos to join you for your two hour special, and he declined — or are you just giving free, no-rebuttal attack time to his opponents? Just curious.

Most everyone I know as well anon. But I don’t know how most everyone both of us know are representative of the community. The conservative end of the local bar are backing Jackson solidly. The Arcata political crowd are solidly behind Hagen, largely due to his work on the Planning Commission. I don’t know where places like Fortuna and Ferndale stand. I see lots of Gallegos signs up in Eureka, but that can be deceiving.
