Amusing but stupid.

Stupid but stupider. These Eye suck-ups refuse to see the writing on the wall — Kevin has undermined his own economic basis by persecuting the growers (along with the usual victims of his personal attack method of journalism, the poor, homeless and powerless).
The Eye has been showing the obvious signs of decline for a couple of years now, and have downgraded their operations into a single windowless room and three scarcely-paid staffers. They only have 10 pages, no color on the inside, and the number of advertisers is clearly lower than most weekly papers (not to mention the fact that the same hydro stores that fill the pages of the Journal aren’t in the Eye)…in other words, Robo is just a feather compared to the mountain of bullshhit Kevin Hoover and his negative personal attacks and endless sucking-up to City Hall have brought upon himself.

Except that he gained 279 subscribers as a result of the controversy. I’m going to make it 280.

Do you really believe the word of some Nazis, Eric?
Making themselves out to be the persecuted when they’re the ones cheerleading the cops, the Arcata Eye has outdone itself with the sleaze this time. Shame on Eric for slopping it up.

You’re calling Kevin a Nazi?

The 279 figure came from the YouTube clip, unless you can point out somewhere on arcataeye.com where that claim is made. It doesn’t make much sense either, when the Eye barely has 1,000 local subscribers left. There aren’t nearly that many people who read Robo’s facebook group, much less attend to some random Ning website or a couple of fliers on the power poles, to cause much of a surge for or against them.
Either way, the legally-required subscriber numbers show a marked decline in the Eye’s local base of readers over the last few years. Some tawdry Robo-as-Hitler clip doesn’t near make up for the Eye’s growing disconnection with reality.

The video was generated by Ryan Hurley. I doubt he made up the number, as it’s kind of the whole point of the video.

Wow! Anonymous says Mr Hoover persecutes the growers, the poor, the homeless and the powerless. The lumping together of growers with the truly disenfranchised could only happen in the mind of a complete dipshit. Hoover tells the story without kissing the growers asses and for this he is vilified. I have nothing against responsible growing but get a fucking clue, growers are not victims.

Did anyone hear Kevin on KMUD yesterday morning? He’s not against pot, he’s fine with small-scale responsible growing, and he does NOT pass information along to the police. The problem is industrialization of neighborhoods for the purpose of growing marijuana. Neighborhoods! Remember those? He has REASON to be pissed, people.
I’ve heard from a lot of SoHum old-times who miss the days when they could ride their horses all the way to Shelter Cove, through their neighbors’ property, before paranoia, fences, gates, and guns did all of that in. Why WOULDN’T Kevin be angry about what’s happening to his town?
Legalize it and end the charade. But in the meantime, let’s not demonize the people who aren’t afraid of pointing out what’s wrong with what marijuana culture in this county has become. So fucking what if the hydro shops don’t advertise in the Eye? Think about what they’re selling: indoor supplies for indoor pot full of pesticide, rodenticide, fungicide, insecticide, and every other -cide you can think of. Yeah, THAT’LL be good for those cancer patients.

I agree. The indoor grow house situation, particularly in urban areas, is out of hand. And either the growing community speaks up responsibly about it, or there will be a Mendo-style backlash.

i think Kevin is cute!!
December 8, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Mr. Nice
What hydro shop are you going to? Rodenticide, wtf? All I seen is a bunch of hippy alternative stuff. Twenty different kinds of neem oil, nematodes, lacewings, and all that good shit. If you want potent insecticides and arsenic-laced sludge, try the run-of-the-mill nurseries.
This is part of my objection to this sensationalist bullshit is y’all don’t know jack about horticulture. Talkin all this shit about pesticides in a largely pesticide-free product when y’all shop at Safeway and prolly water your gardens with municipal tapwater. Hella clueless. Just listen to some of the citizen brown thumbs rambling at the council meetings… I wouldn’t let those people plant sit my lawn.

We have gotten a smattering of new subscriptions and ads from the boycott, but nothing that would make or break the paper.
Unfortunately, my sense is that some of the people think I’m some kind of culture warrior for the anti-drug side, probably because the more zealous types in the cannabis culture have tried to caricature me that way. But I have no interest in that at all, and will surely disappoint anyone who thinks that’s what it is. Perhaps my cuteness will redeem me.
As I mentioned on KMUD yesterday, we have some basic criteria for determining what’s news. Basically it’s Man Bites Dog. When you have an army of cops tear a house apart, lead the owner(s) out in cuffs, turn the crying child over to a relative or CWS and then bring out all kinds of ballasts and fans and dope, well, that’s news.
We’ve done stories on rash houses, pack-rat houses, a motorcycle house and of course the new fad, growzy-woezies.
There was a particularly spectacular poly-drug house bust Friday. I haven’t even thought about Ketamine and DMT since the last time I read a Freak Bros. comic. Oh, and they were allegedly manufacturing LSD candy. Right across from a K-8 school (Pacific Union). Plus pot, hash and also on hand for tragicomic relief, two grams o’ cocaine. Which of these things is not like the other?
And it looks like DTF took out a couple more grow houses in Arcata this morning. The DTF agent at the first one said there were guns inside. Both houses were right by Sunny Brae Middle School, with children walking past every morning. Lovely.
I rarely to never hear any expression of concern about these sorts of installations from the fervent cannabis apologists. It’s always just that I shouldn’t demonize these poor downtrodden suspected felons. Is it me that makes them set up fearful drug factories in residential neighborhoods? No, I just get a phone call from a neighbor (like I did a few minutes ago) or see multiple HCSO vehicles parked on sidewalks and guys in body armor swarming the places, followed by Hefty bags of dope being placed out on the lawn, and follow up with a story.
For all the BS about my being tight with the cops, you’d be surprised how mundane the truth of it is. Sometimes you hear of a bust but have to pry the basic info out of them with repeated phone calls and badgering for days afterward. My sense is that cops don’t enjoy writing, and that they are maxed out with enforcement, which they would rather do than talk about it. There was a raid over in Windsong in March that I didn’t find out about until a month afterward.
It’s funny/sad to hear the same people who were railing about “access” to cannabis last year during Arcata’s Land Use Code hearings now opposing legalization, just to keep the price high and the profit in it because they have the franchise.
Another irony is that some people – the boycott folks, for example – make a point of being stridently anti-corporate, and yet are in the position of defending a huge, uncaring, unregulated, property- and neighborhood-destroying industry. As I keep saying, to them it isn’t about the Humboldt Honey, the Zig-Zag man or any other hippie-dippy counterculture icon. It’s just dollars. Lots of them. Big business.
We need to legalize marijuana, demystify it and return these homes to occupancy by people instead of plants. We should have done this decades ago. But we got baked and forgot.
I really didn’t mean to write this much, but at some point there has to be an adult conversation on the topic, one which actual punctuation and everything, that doesn’t involve people being called Nazis.

Well said, Kevin. You often remind me of a fond epithet thrown at the AVA’s Bruce Anderson in its prime. Wanda Tinasky, the letter-writer rumored (falsely) to be Thomas Pynchon, nailed him as “an old-fashioned horse-whippable newspaper editor.”
Yep, them’s fightin’ words. They’re why you own a newspaper, and good on you.

“rash houses”
I meant trash houses. But if rash houses crop up, by george, we’ll be all over them like a pox! Then the rash lobby can impugn me as being in league with the forces of ointment.

There’s your proof Eric, from the horse’s mouth, the Eye did not receive hundreds of subscriptions from all this, Ryan Hurley is full of shit (as usual) and Eric has shown a distinct lack of judgment in slopping that shit up and telling us it’s caviar.

Cristina, I appreciate you have some sympathy here but you don’t know the whole story. Hoover’s documented cozy relationship with the Arcata Police goes way back, they’ve fed him confidential police reports about political dissidents, and the Eye has NEVER had a balanced report about complaints against the APD.
