Salter
Oh how clever. Spoiled little rich brat lecturing her father on the ways of the world to reveal his hypocrisy. She sure got him.
Is this what passes for liberal entertainment?

Actually, I think The Ice Storm contains some conservative themes particularly about the family. Ang Lee is socially liberal in many respects, but one theme consistent in all of his movies is the value of tradition and family in both his native country and here.
But I’ll bet you’ve never seen it.

Not Ang Lee’s best. The Wedding Banquet was his best. Eat Drink Man Woman his second best.

In Salter’s comment “Is this what passes for liberal entertainment?” lies the simplistic assumption that Lee endorses Ricci’s character’s dialogue. And in that simplistic assumption and subsequent derisive reaction, Salter lays bare his fatal flaw as thoughtful contributer to constructive dialogue. His anger filled dismissiveness is based on knowing a fraction, a facet, of a subject.
