Pretty much guarantees that Jerry Brown will win his third term as California Governor. Boggles the mind.

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry….even though he destroyed my Linda Ronstadt fantasy. Talk about a “Dialed-in” Californian.

Jerry Brown made a stop at the radio station next to my office back in 1978. He struck me as smart, sincere, and intense. Since I was still a
Republican living in the valley with conservative farmers I didn’t hear much good said about Jerry in those days. I appreciated his chutzpah in the presidential race, shouting out his toll-free phone number at every interview (back before the internet, kids) and eventually he got my vote for president. I thought “here’s a guy who can think out of the box”. He is obviously the candiate with the broadest, deepest experience in state government. People who don’t see the value of his unconventional side might find reassurance in his experience.
Brown is a big presence at California Democratic Party conventions. He’s approachable, talkative and still intense and sincere. California has bigger problems than who’s going to be governor. I hope the next eight years will be years of reform. The status quo is not just unacceptable, it’s not working. Brown seems like the ideal leader for the years of change ahead in California.

Greg, I can’t agree with you more. When I registred to vote the first time, I chose to be a democrat because of Jerry Brown. I thought that most democrats would be like him. I was mistaken.
I am no longer a democrat but still like where this guy is coming from.

Perhaps because of the Buddhist thing, the mattress on the floor, the 800 number and the open-mindedness, Brown’s got a rep as an air-headed liberal. Everything I’ve ever heard him say has been as conservative as a Democrat can get in California and hard-headed in a way you rarely see except from life-long pols who’ve seen every reform idea come and go.
I thought the born-again conservative thing was a trick from a guy who figured he’d easily win the Democratic primary and was already steering the standard general-election centrist course. Joe Matthews’ recent profile in the American Prospect — link: http://www.prospect.org/cs/articles?article=see_jerry_run_again. Very interesting character, this Jerry Brown.

You’re right Bruce. He kind of moved into a law in order position shortly after becoming mayor of Oakland. At first I thought it was just political gamesmanship to change his image, but I think being in charge of Oakland and caring about what happens there could seriously challenge one’s liberal sensibilities.
This article suggests that his KPFA rants while out of office might hurt him in the general election.
http://www.sacbee.com/capitolandcalifornia/story/2267658.html
But I don’t think it’ll hurt him at all. It’ll actually convince progressive voters that he’s as progressive as they are, whether he is. The people who’ll be offended by the rants probably aren’t going to vote for him anyway.
With Newsom out he doesn’t even have to play for the progressive vote in the primary. Sets him up pretty nicely.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he made a deal with Newsom.

In the this new millennium paradigm, those liberal rants will save him. I think the only reason Arnold was elected is that people believed he was a liberal in Republican’s scales. His attitude regarding marijuana was a big plus in progressive circles.
I’m pretty sure that Jerry Brown was a cop for a couple of years, after he finished the Jesuit seminary. somewhere out there, there is a picture of Jerry with a roman collar.

Jerry was always law ‘n order, cops and prisons burnished his moonbeams even in the 70s. It was basic to his success, and why he wasn’t successfully typecast here at home.
A bunch of us from EPIC flopped with him back in Headwaters days at his soft loft in Oakland. My only problem with him was he had too much money to spend on trendy, cold accomodations. He was what you might call ‘New Yorky:’ brash, obscene, smart and fast-talking. Real smart, real cynical, real open to the real world. I really liked him–but had a hard time recognizing ‘Governor Moonbeam.’

“New Yorky”? Oddly, he’s a third-generation (at least) San Franciscan.
