This evening I went to the Redway Post Office to collect my mail. I’ve been unable to open the door a couple of times. According to a sign, still up on the door as of tonight, some idiots have been vandalizing the equipment or stuffing items in the lock mechanism, messing it up for everyone. Tonight the key pad is gone. I don’t know if it was removed by postal workers. If so, I hope it was for repairs. I don’t know if it was removed by chronologically adult anger-challenged members of the community. What I do know is that I cannot get my mail. What I also know is that those of us who work regular hours will have difficulty getting our mail on a regular basis.
I have to ask, why does Garberville have street delivery and Redway not? That would seem to solve everyone’s problem, and the post office could make money on box rentals. Of course, they might have to be a little more consumer oriented in their decision making.

More interesting is that Garberville PO allows access to boxes round the clock. redway Postmaster is a wimp who can’t figure out how to serve our community. Why can’t they get someone to lock the doors at midnite or so. I live in the hills , have a job, and have a PO box in Redway and I have had lots of trouble timing my runs to town to get my mail. If it wasn’t such a hassle to change my address after 30 years I would get a box in G’ville.
Maybe a petition to the higher ups in the PO.

In most areas I have lived in semi-rural zones, the post office does not deliver mail to physical addresses within 1/4 mile of the post office. I asked once and was told it was a postal regulation.

snivel snivel snivel. It’s your community, you chose to live there.
How about eliminating the post office in Redway altogether? And just have the one in Garberville for that area?. It would save all kinds of money! The Post Office was talking about some cuts anyway, why not Redway?
It is somewhat amusing when the reisdents of “the hills” freqeuntly complain about any and all form of government except that which helps them personally. Code Enforcement, bad, CHP bad, Sheriffs, bad (until they are a victim and need them), the military, bad, corporations, bad, planning department, bad, assesors office, bad.
The reality is that the majority (NOT all) of the people that live in “the hills” and come to town to get their mail are directly or indirectly involved in the marijuana industry. Some live in the Cove but get their mail at the Post Office in Redway. Why is that? Why not the post office in Thorne? Could it be to try and trick or confuse the marijuana cops?
Wasn’t there some talk about suing Verizon for not having beetter coverage in a certain part of “the hills”? Complain to the Board of Supervisor’s about that nasty ole corporation Verizon not doing what the people in “the hills” want?.
Annnonymoose; Such a hassle to change your address? Talk about a whimp. People change their addresses all the time, it’s easy. RU just lazy?
The petition sounds like a great idea. Who are you going to petition? The US Postal system? The board of supervisor’s? Mike Thompson’s office? Good luck. I think you should get started right away.

But as someone herein pointed out, Garberville does.

Well, when I moved here, I had access to my mail. And not that it matters, but most of the people served by the Redway post office live in town.
And Verizon isn’t in trouble for “not doing what the people in the hills want.” They’re in trouble because they’re in violation of the very contract which gave them a monopoly out there.

This is true . . . but I believe Garberville qualifies for delivery because it is a particular size and density . . . as I said I could be wrong.
This sounds like a good question to ask at the post office. Why do they have delivery in G’ville and not in Redway?

I believe Redway is larger.

an only mouse
if word on the street is to be believed, the post office vandalism is being done by one individual. he’s a pretty drug-rattled man who has been in and out of jail.
I do not want to add to any rant about “the homeless” as the problem for everything in the universe. but when one person is consistently causing a problem for people, then that person needs to be dealt with–housed or not.
and verizon stinks as a service provider. recently i heard Garth Eppling as a guest on some show or ‘nother on KMUD and he stated that when the new fiber-optics were run up the 101 last year, Verizon was offered a connection to it, and they turned it down. Dude!!?? i understand that “economy of scale” issue and that gville/redway are a tiny market, but that was a devastating move to economic development.

also a mouse
word on the street is seldom right, but the individual most often pointed out as the cause of the post office lock stuff is currently in jail. And has been for quite a while.
so….
Even during the time when there were probs with the keylock I could usually get in. It was a question of timing the numbers.
and right, nearly every other post office has the lobby open. Including ones in urban settings up and down the coast.

To Anonymous: I don’t understand why less and less service is a good thing in your eyes. i have had the same PO Box for 32 years in that time the rate for the box rent has gone up , the cost of a stamp has gone up and at the same time the service has been cut by almost 2/3s in terms of open hours. I still ask the same question,
why is Garberville PO able to remain open? How and why did the decision to close get made ? As to petition I meant a petition to the higher ups in the Post Office chain of command and then to our congress person as they are a Federal Agency.
And then why do you defend a huge corporation (Verizon) when they fail to meet their contractual obligations? I’d love to see how you do business.
And yes it would be a totally unnecessary hassle to change my business address as well as my personal address, credit cards , checks reprinted, drivers license changed, voter registration and on and on.
people who live in the” hills” pay taxes as well as support a lot of businesses that pay for these services, I guess we should just all shut up because big daddy at the PO knows better then us and you are prejudiced against the marijuana industry.
RU jealous of your neighbors sucess?
What’s your pleasure Alcohol, Perscription pills?

The postal system is delivering Netflix movies faster now. It used to take two days to get a movie every time. Now it’s one day 4 times out of 5.
Small mitigation, I know.

That may not be the USPO’s doing so much as it is Netflix’s . . . Netflix has been opening up more “warehouses” in more parts of the country than before, to send those DVDs out. It may be that the time has been reduced because there is now a “warehouse/depot” closer to you than ever before.

That could be. I’ll have to check the address on the next movie. It used to go to San Jose.
I also noticed they send stuff out on Saturdays now.

I’m very satistfied with the serivce I get from the US postal service. Yes the cost of a stamp has gone up but what hasn’t?
Just think, for less than 50 cents you can send a letter to Homer Alaska, St Thomas, Guam, Bristol Maine, Columbus Ohio and the list goes on. Less than 50 cents! And it will arrive in 3 to 5 days! The PO may be having financial problems but I sure can’t complain.
The PO has also opened up all kinds of small post offices to provide better service, maybe they shoud close some of them? Redway PO? Phillipsville?
As to Verizon the big bad corporation, I get great service and reception. They even call me and a real person tells me if I’m about to go over my alloted minutes. I can’t complain.
If you’re not capable to completing the change of address forms you can’t be that good at running your business. And I don’t say that to be mean since I have moved several times in the past 20 years and seldom had anything more than a glich due to changing my address.
Jelous of my neighbors success??? Certainly not jelous of anyone that lives in the hills of SoHUM. Greed is not in my heart or soul. But I do enjoy ales and some wine. A thief thinks everyone else is a thief and a jeolous person thinks everyone else is jelous, or so the saying goes.

It was annnonymoose who claimed that someone critical of the “marijuana industry” must be jealous. So, according to milt, that means annnonymoose is likely a Republican. Sounds right to me too.

I don’t know much about Redway’s post office, but I do know that Eureka had several homeless people basically camping out there at night for awhile, and not the homeless families on hard times types. These were the toothless meth freak types.
