Funny you should mention the Uptown. Is that place still open? I got a PHD there on "The effects of alcohol and cocaine on a twenty-something's social and spiritual life" Larry and Scott owned the place back then. Larry was the best bartender in the Mission, bar none. He had a following at the Ritespot down the street and when he left to open the Uptown, we followed. A troubled but soulful man. Gone now, by his own hand; another casualty of addiction. I spent many an coke-fueled after-hour in the back room chatting furiously about my passion d'jour. In those days you could get your drink and your coke from the bartender. Later, shortly after I had clawed my way to sobriety, heroin replaced coke there as the party favor of choice and anytime I stopped in to say hi to my old running buddies the place resembled a morgue.

By the way my vote for best Mexican joint was Rosevelts Tamale Parlor on 24th

Look, I wasn't trying to compare Garberville to San Francisco. But for me there are three types of food - art, craft, and utilitarian. We have a number of great places which sell craft, including the Woodrose, Mateel, Meadows Deli, Amelia's, Rene's and several others. And yes, we have Cecil's and the Benbow for the art, and a slew of decent places for the utilitarian.

It's not fair to compare to SF, which is a culinary mecca even among major cities. If I started listing the great restaurants I've visited there, I'd be typing here all day long. Do you know how long it's been since I've chewed on a decent dim sum chicken's foot?!

This videographer would have been publicly tarred and feathered at the 16th Street BART station.

Funny.

Koast1....la taqueria has always been my favorite too.

I used to live near Hayes Valley, which was colorful and dirty and gritty and fabulous. Now it's the kind of neighborhood where Weird Fish would fit right in.

You won't find many, and even those you will find are middle class students and bohos. In fact, most of the Hispanic population is being driven out of the city and into the valley. But for rent control, the City would be lily-white by now.

I wasn't aware that rice on a burrito negated its authenticity. I love rice on a burrito. Call me a "gringo."

The White Arches place is good however. I went there as a kid.

But I've been biting into the asada chicken with tons of black beans and, yes, rice, at El Torro (and Pancho Villa around the corner on 16th - same owners) since my Socialist Workers Party days in high school (about the best thing I learned from the experience).

By the way, we do have some very good restaurants in and around Garberville, even by City standards. The problem is that I've been through the entire menu in all of them.

Tacqueria San Jose is my favorite, 24th & Mission. Years ago there was a better one at 20th and Bryant, long closed.

Didn't see a single non Anglo person in the promo video, except the cook, natch. Personally, I favor the "two State solution" with only Anglo settlements South of the Slot.

weird fish isnt all that great...very small protions...and can be hit or miss depending on the day..and the prices are not at all fair, but in comparison to resturants in G-ville this place shines...as far as buritos..i guess you consider a burrito w/ rice as a burrito...mexican sleeping pill is what you get from la cumbre or toro, if you really want to have a great burrito w/o rice try la taqaria on mission at 25th (the white arches)...hands down best tacos and burrritos in the mission...maybe in the state..
