Yeah, but if he was really pleased with the direction his party had gone in the last decade or two, he would have bowed out gracefully and let the next generation have it. I don’t think people who are pushing 80 switch parties JUST to get re-elected.

Well, he has always been prochoice. He’s been a moderate.
But you’re right. He could have made a big difference if he left with Jeffords a few years back, and instead let Jeffords languish out on a limb. Shame on Specter for that, and shame on Lincoln Chafe too (and the NARAL leadership which supported him to the end).
