Larry Glass was a hero a few days ago. There’s been a lengthy discussion over the extent of his heroism over at Heraldo’s, opinions which are unfortunately caught up in politics. I’ve scoured youtube in desperate search for the opening scene of The Contender, but alas, nobody saw fit to plagiarize it for public benefit. If you’ve seen the movie, you know why it’s kind of funny under the circumstances.

Heraldo
You are strangely insistent on fabricating a parallel to a movie in which a politician tried to make himself a hero by staging a drowning and this situation which involved real people, has resulted in real and serious injuries to a local person, during which Larry happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Perhaps you should send the movie to this woman’s family. I’m sure they’d get a real kick out of it.

For once (and mark this down in the history books) I agree with Heraldo.

Well, the imagery is very strong. Bridge. Water. Politician. Timing (the second time I saw the movie, I noticed the Hathaway character looking at his watch. That’s called “foreshadowing.”).
Okay, I’ll let it go, though I’m sure the family has concerns which far outweigh a blogger’s movie comparisons to real life. Remember Hinkley and the Taxi Driver parallels?
In Jack Hathaway’s defense, he didn’t mean to stage a drowning. He was trying to stage a rescue.

there is a thundering silence on this blog about palestinian deaths. given the recent history on this blog, don’t you think fair play deserves some mention of the “hannukah massacres”?
i actually understand why you might not wish to reopen this worm can, but i would like to hear you explain your reasons.

It’s come up in the Hubris thread. I just haven’t pulled it together to read up and make a post. If you would like to write a guest post and email it to me I’ll be happy to post it with whatever attribution you like, with a disclaimer that it may not represent my views. From what I know, the actions are horrible and part of the blame can be placed on the complete lack of initiative from this country in the past 8 years after having come close to some working agreements before Clinton left office. These actions by Israel are brutal, and they have never brought themselves security this way.

Thank you, Eric. It is a delicate, frustrating thing happening and I appreciate your post!

You’re comments about the supposed parallels between Larry Glass’s helping a woman who fell off the Samoa bridge to a movie story seemed a “real” stretch. What in the world are you trying to imply? Very poor taste on your part, and what is your point?

It was a joke. Nobody got it.
