The Times-Standard reports that Mexican cartels are growing huge marijuana farms on public land in Humboldt County.
What I don’t understand is why they bother to come here where the funding for the war is at a premium. California remains number 1 in eradicated plants. However, Humboldt County doesn’t even rate in the top ten counties for California for outdoor grows (though we remain number one for indoor grows – at least in terms of busts).
Not that the DOJ is an unbiased source, but there is some interesting data on environmental and other consequences of the public land grows.
The photo is of an insecticide bottle the DOJ claims was found at a California grow site last year.
I am concerned however that the Mexican cartel factor may be played up to justify more profiling locally. It should be pointed out that PALCO and many other legit employers also hire Hispanics locally. A Fortuna-based physician I deposed about eight years ago told me that one-third of PALCO’s employees were Hispanic.
Beginnings Inc. presents a benefit for Beginnings Octagon remodeling, Sunday May 13, 2007 at, of course, the Octagon. $35 to 45.00 donation per place setting – sliding scale.
There will be gourmet food (including several egg dishes in addition to the omelet bar), champagne, and desserts (some of them baked by Jana) with two seatings at 9:30 a.m. and noon. I’m told that noon is filling up pretty quickly, but that there remains plenty of seating at 9:30 now. Book it now!
There will also be supervised activities for kids and childcare.
