Apparently, he made a bit of a stir at the Academy Awards last night.
From the Nation:
Gore’s main appearance of the night came when the former vice president joined actor Leonardo DiCaprio for one of those deliberately hokey Oscar night versions of a public service announcement.
Ostensibly, they were at the podium to tell the viewing audience that, in DiCaprio’s words, “this show has officially gone green.”
“Which means,” Gore chimed in, “that environmentally intelligent practices have been integrated fully into every aspect of the planning and production of these academy awards. And you know what? It is not as hard as you might think. We have a long way to go, but all of us can do something in our own lives to make a difference.”
After steering the curious to http://www.oscar.com for environmental tips from the Academy and the National Resources Defense Council, DiCaprio got down to the meat of the moment, declaring, “Now, although our time is almost up, I want to say I’m very proud to be standing next to such an inspirational leader in the fight against global warming. You are a true champion for the cause, Mr. Gore.”
“Now,” DiCaprio continued, “are you sure, are you positive that all this hard work hasn’t inspired you to make any other kind of major, major announcement to the world here tonight?”
Smiling like the Cheshire Cat that he can be for at least a few more months, Gore said, “Well, I do appreciate that, Leo. And I’m kind of surprised at the feelings welling up here actually. You’ve been very convincing. Even though I honestly had not planned on doing this, I guess with a billion people watching, it’s as good as time as any. So, my fellow Americans, I’m going to take this opportunity right here and now to formally announce my intention…”
The music that stirs up when a stunt-double-thanking winner goes on just a little too long roared up, silencing Gore, who exited the stage to laughter and more, much more, applause.
Hmmmmm.

I hope he runs again.

I am glad to see that his adoring left-wing audience was able to enjoy having multiple Gorbasims. The real truth about global warming is discussed in a Eureka Reporter editorial today. The delusional among us would rather screa, the sky is falling than deal with the very real disaster pending in Iran. God save us all if the Mullahs obtain nuclear weapons.
Now, is this the part where the radical left shouts long live Hugo Chavez and begins to rant about being more scared of George Bush than Iran?

It was reported today that The Goracle’s residence uses 20 times more electricity than the average American home and that his use has increased since the movie debuted.
(There was no mention of how much electricity his other residenceS consumed.)

When I look at Clinton and Obama it is really hard to see there candidacies working out. Especially Barack’s. The south is still deeply racist. Gore can easily step in and I dont think he comes in with any of the baggage they do. Gore has spent the last 6 years doing unique things. I read somewhere he may be worth alot, ALOT more than people think. Remember Google has gone public, CurrentTV is running a profit, Inconvenient Truth is the biggest selling documentary ever.
I guess what I’m saying is that he has now built an image of himself as innovative and successful. Certainly something the country has lacked since 2001. I think people will be hungry for that as is demonstrated in the Draft Gore movement. Remember this guy was really ripped apart in the media following the election, and its only been in the past year that his popularity has soared while Bush’s has plummeted.
He has positioned himself perfectly, the outsider, as he and Clinton did in 1992, and GWB in 2000 and well, Reagan in 1980. It is a winning theme in presidential elections.
Personally I think a Gore/Clark 08 ticket would be pretty unbeatable.

The Republicans have even bleaker prospects for 08. So far Mccain and Guliani are the two most notable contenders. Guliani would split the Republicans because of his views that gays are human beings and abortion should not be part of public policy. Mccain has taken a rightward turn after being smeared by George W Bush in 2000. Speaking at Bob Jones University and cuddling up with a now deeply unpopular president may be problematic. Also I personally don’t like the guy for his ‘gook’ comments and also remember him publicly making fun of Chelsea Clinton as ugly back when she was 12 years old?

Actually, I believe most of the lefts position is based on naivety, but this actually works to the conservative’s advantage. That way if Al Gore wins the election again, all they have to do is tell him he lost and he will slink way with his tail between his legs.

Anon 4:22 – there are a number of conservatives around here, and hardly any of them feels compelled to shut up about anything. They may not be in the majority, but they’re certainly present.
The more fascinating folks are the Republicans who grow marijuana for a living. I figure it has to be based on some F.A. Hayek view of the unfettered free market, with virtue and value being defined by the cartesian measures of supply and demand. Or maybe they consider it a tax revolt.

SLP your words are not wise, and they are neoconservative in origin. How has GWB helped the situation with Iran? He lumped Iran in with the Axis of Evil, invaded the one country that had no weapons, destabalized the country and region and caused a speed up in nuclear arms development in both N. Korea and Iran.
The real delusion is the delusion you and other neoconservatives have, which is military force is the best way to project US influence. Youre fooling nobody anymore (Well, what 22% in the latest polls). You belong in Stanley Kubricks ‘Dr. Strangelove’ and your ideology needs to go seek survival in the mineshafts, Mein Fuhrer.

POWER: GORE MANSION USES 20X AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD; CONSUMPTION INCREASE AFTER ‘TRUTH’
Mon Feb 26 2007 17:16:14 ET
The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan research organization committed to achieving a freer, more prosperous Tennessee through free market policy solutions, issued a press release late Monday:
Last night, Al Gore’s global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.
Gore’s mansion, [20-room, eight-bathroom] located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).
In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.
The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.
Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.
Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.
Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.
“As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk to walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use,” said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.
In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

I actually own the rock, well, mostly the bank does. But if the neocons keep on with their brilliant global strategy, hiding under a rock might be our safest bet. Americans are already worried ablout their lives and their loved ones. It’s not necessary to wait for your perceived perilous future. We’re worried about Iran’s nuclear future, but there’s a nation (USSR) that’s got thousands of of nuclear weapons and their leader (Putin and many more inside the Kremlin) don’t like us (the Bush Admin.) very much. They think we’re bullies. Now where would they get that notion from? Anyway the have the arms and means to target as well. So let’s just keep on rattling those sabers. It’s worked so well, so far.

I was under the impression Russia and Iran were fairly close allies. History tells us treaties never stopped a good war. I do agree that less nuclear arms in the world the better, whether it be Iran, Pakistan, Israel, China or the US. Diplomacy and respect are stronger methods to acheive world peace. I remember when people were terrified of Red China back in the fifties. They were fanatical communists out to rule the world by any means necessary. “Better dead than Red.” As kids we were terrified at the thought of it. Would you look at us now. Who would have thunk? The same fear mongering was happening then as it is now. There must be a better way is all I’m saying.

I hear what your saying wide foot, but analogies are dangerous because there is never a direct correlation between the objects of comparison. The Chineese always cared about their own destruction. Iran’s rulers do not. The cult of the Mahdi holds that the World must experience an apocalypse before the Mahdi may return. The World has never faced a situation wherein adherents to such a primitive worldview obtained the power to cause mass destruction. Diplomacy is worthless with a country that has the goal of bringing on an apocalypse. It is different this time and my fear is that we are asleep and soothing ourself with seemingly astute analogies that are in reality traps for the unwary.

And I hear what you’re saying, SLP, but as time goes on and the proliferation of these kinds of weapons increase, and the fear and hate increase, what choices are we left with; Annilate entire countries, innocents and all, just to get to the leadership with such destructive goals? And we have to assume we cannot kill them all, and if we don’t(kill them all) then we’ll have to assume the seeds of hate and revenge will once again surface later for our children to deal with. I’d rather try and kill the “idea” than a population.

To demonstrate how peaceful you can be has never been a significantly successful strategy. As I recall, even the epitome of peace, Mahatma Gandhi, was murdered.
From my own experience, as a child, the only way to have peace is to hit back hard! I’ve tried appeasement, with almost universal failure. Seldom, if ever, has a bully said to me, “You are being such a nice guy, I see the error of my ways”. I’ve taken some bad beatings, but if you can get in a few good licks, that sting your opponent enough, even if you lose the fight, the bully will leave you alone! As an adult, people recognize that I won’t be walked on. I think that people know that, and don’t cross me, and I‘m allowed to live in peace.
On a global scale, the nuclear weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki stopped a worldwide war!.. Stopped war for a great long time… We were allowed to live in peace. To some, that was the wrong thing to do, others know that it was the least violent of all possibilities!
My hope is, if the insane religious fanatics of the Middle East know that they can’t possibly succeed, it will be best to give-in and live in peace. If they are given a glimmer of hope that they will succeed, they will never stop fighting. S.L.P. insists that they want to bring about the apocalypse. If that is true, should we give it to them, so what ever remains of the world can live in peace?
Unfortunately, I agree with S.L.P. that we are up against an evil that peaceful people just don’t recognize. They teach their children to hate from the day they are born. We teach our people to love peace from the day they are born. There is really no middle ground.
Help me here. Where has appeasement worked? How do we convince the people of the Middle East peace is the best path, and to leave us alone? Walk softly and carry a big stick? The price of Freedom is eternal vigilance? How do we free ourselves of these insane lunatics that hate “The Great Satan”. I want peace, tell me that there is a better plan than obliterating every man woman a child in the Middle East!

I understand what you’re saying. I too believe you need to stand up to bullies if they threaten you or your loved ones. But like SLP says “analogies are dangerous because there is never a direct corrolation between the objects of the comparison.” You’re wrong about Gandhi, because his method did work. India is a free independent nation directly because of his commitment to Peace. And MLK used the same method and we see our country stronger and greater because of his work. And yes, they were both murdered, but their Ideas are alive and well. If they did nothing they’d be dead anyway from old age. We all die. It’s the legacy we leave behind for future generations that matters most.

My guess is there will be a ‘shock and awe’ type airstrike on Iran around this time next (Or possibly before) year to set the tone for the presidential primaries. Very short, but very devastating. The president I believe can wage war for something like 30-60 days without any kind of congressional approval. And if it is a one or three day operation it probably wont require a supplemental budget from congress either.
We have this nice shiny expensive airforce with no other airforce in the world coming close to its capabilities. Why not use it?

I wrote the shock and awe comment. I hope they don’t do it, but I would not be surprised. This President obviously doesn’t care what kind of mess he leaves for the next leader. Thats why I think its a distinct possibility. I think they would use the airforce, for the simple reason that its available, can’t be used against rebels, and would probably destroy allot of their infrastructure. Think Lebanon 2006. The point isnt to win, but set them back 30 years.

Oh yeah, and for the record…
The 4,000-square-foot house is a model of environmental rectitude.
Geothermal heat pumps located in a central closet circulate water through pipes buried 300 feet deep in the ground where the temperature is a constant 67 degrees; the water heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. Systems such as the one in this “eco-friendly” dwelling use about 25% of the electricity that traditional heating and cooling systems utilize.
A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from roof runs; wastewater from sinks, toilets and showers goes into underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water from the cistern is used to irrigate the landscaping surrounding the four-bedroom home. Plants and flowers native to the high prairie area blend the structure into the surrounding ecosystem.
No, this is not the home of some eccentrically wealthy eco-freak trying to shame his fellow citizens into following the pristineness of his self-righteous example. And no, it is not the wilderness retreat of the Sierra Club or the Natural Resources Defense Council, a haven where tree-huggers plot political strategy.
This is President George W. Bush’s “Texas White House” outside the small town of Crawford.

“Global domination” is not the right term because it implies dictatorship. That’s not what we are about, never has been. But what is wrong with sharing what we have with the entire planet? What would be wrong with that? That people everywhere would be free to speak their minds, pursue their choice of education, career, religion and lifestyle. It does not mean that they lose the right to self determination. You forget that we are the good guys.

Boy, has this “debate” unraveled quickly. I do lean toward to the Anon that spoke of the work of Jesus when he walked the planet. Not a bad way to start a new world. Helping he poor and needy. Unconditional love. Shit like that. It’s people that fear death and have no faith, and are therefore devoid of dreams, that keep the world as it is. Unfortunately, the world is abound with these souls.

Rose, sometimes it’s easy to forget we’re the “good guys” when we witness acts that would never, and could never be classified as “good.” A preemptive invasion of a sovreign nation killing hundred’s of thousands of innocents. People in the “good guys” country making millions on dollars off their deaths. War profiteering is not “good”. It’s called blood money, Rose. The “not so good” part of it is, these profits were factored into the invasion plans. In other words “good guys” knew there was lots of money to be made with this war. It’s been said there is a special place in hell for people that make money off war. And there’s probably a little nook in hell for people that supported these people, even if they do claim ignorance, Sorry to burst your bubble, Rose. Good and bad. Black and white. Nope. There is much grey in our world. We can only make a personal choice not to participate in these “good acts.”

Bravo Wide Foot. Well said. People like Rose forget that current and former members of this administration are part of PNAC. The very same group that, as early as 1998, were advocating for a domination of the Middle East by use of military force in order to “protect American business interests and allies”. How prophetic huh? Keeping China in check is another goal of theirs. With this crowd in charge, we are indeed not playing the role of “good guys”. Much “grey” indeed.
