My question is what the tribes think they are buying? Combined with Pierson’s money, special interests funneled over $10,000 into the LaVallee campaign. Interesting that the funding from the tribes came the last day and wouldn’t have to be reported until it was too late to effect the outcome. What are you hiding Peter?

Well, he was reportedly out of money for the last week of campaigning and had to do some quick fundraising. Posters here claimed that his setting the meeting to discuss the Burgess killing was motivated by a need for free press time. If the posters knew what they were talking about, he probably hit some big ticket donors for some last minute money. What’s the mystery?

I don’t mind the last minute fundraising as much as the source. Neither tribe has business within the city of Eureka, so why are they contributing? And to be nondenominational, I don’t think Bonnie should have accepted the $25,000 from the tribes either. I think another problem I have is that when big money is brought in, some sources are “better” than others. Tribe money = good. Arkley money = bad.

Political donations aren’t always about a geographic interest. Sometimes it’s an ideological interest. Sometimes you want to promote a leader you think may go higher. Sometimes you want to promote a broader political agenda because you think a certain result will create a mandate that goes beyond Eureka. The tribe donates to liberal candidates probably because the council relates to liberal politics.

Funny how it is ok when it goes to liberal candidates, or comes from a liberal source, Eric.

How what is okay? Campaign donations?
As a matter of principle, it’s also okay to donate to conservative candidates, or come from conservative donors.
I’m missing the point Rose.

The Tribes are not liberal. Why do you think the Democrats in the legislature have stopped indian compacts — because the tribes have refused to abide by labor agreements. The Tribes are self interested and that is why the question of who asked for the contribution and why matters. It’s all about transparency, right?

Can’t argue with that. Nor are they “liberal” in the sense of controlled growth, if the casino developments are any indication.

Eric – can you tell me what the difference is between a large campaign contribution and a bribe?
http://www.times-standard.com/local/ci_4677317
“HCOAG Board of Directors President LaVallee, according to campaign filings, received a last-minute $2,100 donation from the tribe in his effort to retain the mayor’s chair in Eureka. Rodoni said the $2,100 contribution to LaVallee’s recent election campaign from the Hoopa Valley Tribe puts LaVallee into a “considerable conflict” with state law.”
I won’t even go into taking $2,000 in campaign contributions from marijuana sellers ($1,000 from Eric and Dianna Heimstadt of Humboldt Medical Supply and $1,000 from Humboldt Medical Supply).
And what’s up with LaVallee’s $2,500 campaign contribution from Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria?
Considering that the local Indian casinos have the worst record of labor relations in Humboldt County, the local Indian casinos are not unionized – nor will they ever be, the local Indian casinos are a “right to work” place of employment – meaning they can fire any worker at will for any cause, I find these contributions to Mayor LaVallee and Bonnie Neely quite disturbing.
So much for being the candidates supporting “workers” in Humboldt County.

can you tell me what the difference is between a large campaign contribution and a bribe?
Well, a large campaign contribution is legal and reported, while a bribe is illegal and covert.
